What is freelance carbon capture engineering?

Freelance carbon capture engineering involves working independently to help organizations or projects design, implement, and optimize technologies that capture and store carbon dioxide emissions. Freelance engineers in this field may assist with feasibility studies, system design, process optimization, or regulatory compliance for carbon capture solutions. These professionals often work on a project basis for clients in industries like energy, manufacturing, or environmental consulting, helping them reduce their carbon footprint and meet sustainability goals.

What are some typical challenges faced by freelance carbon capture engineers, and how can they be managed?

Freelance carbon capture engineers often face challenges such as staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies, managing project-based workloads, and building strong client relationships remotely. Since projects may span various industries and locations, adapting to different regulatory standards and site-specific requirements is essential. Networking within the environmental engineering community and continuously upskilling through professional courses can help freelancers stay competitive and deliver innovative solutions. Additionally, clear communication and solid project management practices are key to successfully collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients.

Job description

This position has a target start date in summer 2027.

As a Process Engineer Intern, you will be assigned to work on a project team in our Energy & Industrial Group business unit and assist the Oil & Gas engineering team members in the execution of their project work. These projects may involve the design of new and/or modifications and upgrades to oil & gas upstream production, gas transmission and distribution, renewable, and/or carbon-capture engineering projects.

Working under the direction of senior engineers, this internship will offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your academic background in engineering in one or more of the following areas:

  • Assist in the preparation of engineering calculations, specifications, and designs.
  • Work on a variety of tasks associated with project reporting, such as tracking and evaluating project activities, project progress, and associated data.
  • Be involved in system designs and the preparation of specifications for the procurement of major industrial energy equipment and related installation services.

We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Must have an expected graduation date in Winter 2027 or Spring 2028 with a Bachelor or Masters of Science degree in engineering.
  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail.
  • Self-starter, proactive, able to work independently with minimal direction.
  • Ability to quickly identify and prioritize issues, create solutions and meet deadlines.

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience within campus and/or the community.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Prior, related internship or co-op experience.

In this role, we expect people to be willing or able to solve problems using modern tools:

  • You are expected to take engineering problems from issue to solution using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Many engineers in these roles build or use automation to create calculations, summarize technical documents, or draft design documentation, including appropriate use of agentic AI tools, with strong engineering judgment and verification of results.
  • Programming or scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate calculations, design checks, reporting, or data transformation is valued but not required.
  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other training in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that helps you apply automation or agentic AI to real engineering problems.
