Job description

Overview
The Building Automation Lead is responsible for overseeing the installation, configuration, maintenance, and repair of Building Automation Systems (BAS) that support the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure across the FASTC campus. This role ensures that automated systems operate reliably, efficiently, and safely to maintain optimal environmental conditions for the personnel on campus while supporting energy-management goals. The position requires advanced technical expertise, manufacturer-specific training, and the ability to work in a secure, mission-critical environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead the operation, troubleshooting, and optimization of building automation systems controlling HVAC, lighting, energy management, and other facility systems.
  • Install, configure, and commission BAS components including controllers, sensors, actuators, and communication networks.
  • Diagnose system faults, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to restore proper functionality.
  • Monitor system performance and adjust programming, setpoints, and sequences to improve efficiency and occupant comfort.
  • Review engineering drawings, control diagrams, and technical documentation to support system upgrades and repairs.
  • Coordinate with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and facility operations teams to ensure integrated system performance.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of system configurations, programming changes, maintenance activities, and equipment inventories.
  • Ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications, industry standards, and facility security requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior technicians and maintenance personnel.
  • Support emergency response and after-hours troubleshooting as needed to maintain operational continuity.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support facility operations and mission requirements.

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND LICENSURE:
  • Secret security clearance required.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering, building automation, electrical technology, or a related field.
  • Must have manufacturer-specific training on the BAS platforms installed at FASTC; training certificates required.
  • 7 years of experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting building automation systems in commercial, industrial, or government facilities.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC control strategies, electrical systems, and energy-management principles.
  • Proficiency with BAS software, networking protocols, and system integration.
  • Ability to interpret control schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering documents.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Commitment to safety, system reliability, and adherence to regulatory and manufacturer standards.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prior experience in the supervision of a workforce responsible for operations, maintenance, and repair of commercial building infrastructure systems.

  • Must be able be able to conduct preventative maintenance activities and minor repairs from ladders or elevated platforms.
  • Work requires the incumbent to walk, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in uncomfortable positions.
  • Ability to lift, carry and set up tools, equipment and parts that weigh up to and occasionally over fifty (50) pounds.
  • Must be comfortable getting dirty, dusty, and greasy in an indoor or outdoor environment with frequent exposure to excessive noise.
  • Must be able to perform duties under adverse weather conditions (extreme cold / heat, etc.).
  • Must be able to work alternate shift schedules when necessary to meet the mission requirements of the customer, to include weekends and holidays.
  • Must be able to perform on-call duties when scheduled and report to work within one hour of notification.

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE:
Secret or higher security clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. U.S. Citizenship is required.
