Freelance Analog Design Engineer information

What does a freelance analog design engineer do?

A Freelance Analog Design Engineer specializes in designing, testing, and optimizing analog electronic circuits, such as amplifiers, filters, oscillators, and power management systems. Unlike digital circuits, analog circuits process continuous signals and require a deep understanding of electrical characteristics and noise management. As freelancers, these engineers work on a project basis for various clients, offering flexibility and specialized expertise. Their work can span industries including telecommunications, audio equipment, medical devices, and automotive electronics. Freelance Analog Design Engineers may also assist with prototyping, troubleshooting, and documentation throughout the product development cycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance analog design engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Freelance Analog Design Engineer, you need a strong background in analog circuit theory, hands-on experience with circuit design, and typically a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools such as SPICE simulation software, PCB design platforms (like Altium or Cadence), and relevant certifications (e.g., Professional Engineer license) is highly beneficial. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and time management skills make you stand out when collaborating with clients and delivering projects independently. These competencies ensure you can design reliable analog systems, efficiently manage client expectations, and maintain a competitive edge in the freelance market.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance analog design engineers when working with remote clients?

Freelance analog design engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning design expectations with clients who may not have a strong technical background, managing communication across different time zones, and ensuring that deliverables meet both functional and regulatory requirements. Additionally, remote work can complicate collaborative tasks like circuit reviews and prototype testing, requiring effective use of simulation tools and clear documentation. Building trust and maintaining transparency with clients is essential for successful project outcomes and long-term collaborations.

What is the difference between Freelance Analog Design Engineer vs Electronics Design Engineer?

AspectFreelance Analog Design EngineerElectronics Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically holds a degree in electrical engineering or related fieldTypically holds a degree in electrical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, often remoteIn-house or consulting firms, office-based or hybrid
Industry UsageFreelance projects across various clients and industriesCompany projects within specific industries

Freelance Analog Design Engineers work independently on specific projects, often remotely, providing specialized expertise. Electronics Design Engineers are typically employed by companies, working on integrated product development. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in work setting and employment structure.

Job description

Director of Analog Design - Wearable SoCs

Build the silicon that powers the next era of human-computer interaction.

About Ixana

Ixana is a Purdue University spinoff pioneering brain‑inspired wearable computing. We've developed Wi‑R, a patented communication technology that is 100 times more energy efficient than Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi. Join our 60‑person team building the next era of real‑time, AI‑powered human‑computer interaction.

The Wi‑R Revolution

Wi‑R is our patented non‑radiative near‑field communication technology that creates secure "wire‑like wireless" experiences through small E‑field bubbles around your body. This breakthrough enables unprecedented energy efficiency at sub‑0.1 nanojoules per bit, making long‑term wearable and implantable devices finally practical.

The Role: Director of IC Design

Own the next‑generation Wi‑R chips from specification to tape‑out and, if desired, to mass production.

What You’ll Own
  • Architect next‑generation Wi‑R SoCs, integrating analog/RF front‑end, ultra‑low‑power digital blocks, and sensor interfaces.
  • Build and lead the IC design team (digital, analog, mixed‑signal) across West Lafayette and remote sites.
  • Own chip tape‑outs end to end: RTL‑to‑GDS, IP integration, ESD, packaging co‑design, and silicon validation.
  • Define and enforce methodologies for IP reuse, verification, and simulation.
  • Partner with product, firmware, and hardware teams to co‑optimize system design.
  • Be the technical face of silicon for investors, partners, and customers.
What we are looking for
  • 15+ years experience in ASIC or SoC design, with at least 3 successful tape‑outs in mixed‑signal or RF‑heavy products.
  • Proven success leading teams through spec→tape‑out→bring‑up→production.
  • Deep experience in low‑power wireless SoCs, including Bluetooth, NFC, UWB, or proprietary PHYs.
  • Proficiency in Cadence toolchains, floorplanning, DFT, timing closure, and analog/digital integration.
  • Bonus: Prior work in wearable, bioelectronics, or medical devices.
Compensation
  • Base salary $175,000 – $225,000 USD.
  • 10‑50% cash bonus.
  • Meaningful early‑stage equity.
  • Relocation bonus, partner job‑search help.
Benefits Package
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • 5 days a week in office. Flexible work arrangements and generous PTO.
  • Professional development opportunities and conference attendance.
  • Patent development and technology leadership opportunities.
  • Immigration and work visa support for those already in the US on a work permit.
  • Full visa sponsorship (STEM‑OPT transfer / H‑1B / TN / future green card).
Why Join Us
  • Work on deep tech that matters.
  • Collaborate with world‑class experts and industry leaders.
  • Own your work end‑to‑end and see real impact.
  • Enjoy a culture of speed, rigor, and respect.
  • Competitive perks, equity, and global exposure.
Location

West Lafayette, IN – On‑site at our R&D Center.

Ixana is an equal opportunity employer committed to advancing human‑computer interfaces through innovative low‑power electronics innovation.
