Job description

Job Title: Real Estate Lending/Mortgage Fraud Specialist
Location: Vienna, VA or Winchester, VA
Work model: hybrid, onsite 3 days (2 days remote)
Pay Rate: Open to W2
Position Type: Multiyear Contract

Candidates must be able to pass both a credit and criminal background check. This role requires candidates with 2-5 years of professional experience and real estate lending experience (required).
Key skills for this role include fraud detection and investigation, data analysis, communication and documentation.
This role will focus on protecting the organization and its members from financial fraud, account abuse, forgery, and suspicious activity. The individual monitors transactions, identifies fraud patterns, investigates potential fraud cases, documents findings, coordinates with security teams, and helps improve fraud detection processes and controls. The role also supports fraud-prevention projects, develops reporting and analysis, provides training, and collaborates with multiple business units to reduce risk while supporting business objectives. The position is analytical and operational in nature, requiring someone who can review large amounts of account and transaction data, recognize suspicious trends, communicate effectively with stakeholders, and ensure fraud cases are handled accurately and efficiently. While working under supervision, the employee is expected to exercise sound judgment, manage multiple priorities, and contribute to continuous improvement of fraud prevention and detection programs.

Experience reviewing transactions and identifying suspicious activity. Strong Excel and reporting skills. Experience handling cases, tickets, investigations, or operational reviews. Knowledge of financial institution operations, lending, deposits, or payment systems. Excellent customer service and communication skills. A bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Criminal Justice, Economics, Accounting, or a related field.
Description
To assist business unit management in establishing effective department policies, processes, standards, and reporting to balance department goals against financial fraud. Provide recommendations to create, improve and implement effective fraud policies, procedures, and changes to current fraud detection systems and methods. Ensure timely, effective processing and resolution of fraud case management. Build cross functional collaboration and partnerships with business units and Security to ensure solutions and analysis align with strategic business initiatives and achieve desired objectives. Identify training needs for department staff. Work on fraudulent activity issues requiring working knowledge of organizational objectives and priorities. Work under supervision.
Responsibilities
  • Identify patterns of activity indicating possible fraud or account abuse
  • Monitor member account transactions to proactively identify fraudulent activity, suspicious communications, take immediate corrective/protective action, and escalate alerts/cases to the appropriate Security division for in depth investigation
  • Manage the review/analysis of potential fraud and forgery cases prior to submission to Security
  • Track and monitor progress of fraud cases; inform related parties of status and actions taken on fraud accounts
  • Communicate with internal and external customers on fraud and security issues, problem resolution, and account information as defined by internal policies, process and procedure
  • Identify and analyze opportunities for new and/or improved processes, data, or technology; provide clear picture of possible outcomes
  • Serve as subject matter expert concerning fraud trends
  • Support projects related to fraud detection, prevention or root cause analysis
  • Collect, prepare and maintain data for analysis, reports and reference
  • Establish incident response standards, related training requirements, and processes and procedures to ensure quality response to various forms of security issues (e.g., fraud) and resolve/achieve maximum protection of members and assets
  • Provide or coordinate training to users regarding change/release management processes and procedures; document and communicate updates
  • Collaborate with Navy Federal business areas to gain an understanding and impact of transactions process and procedures on other process and procedures, and identify risk potential for fraudulent activity

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or related field
  • Real Estate Lending

  • Familiarity with NCUA regulations that govern the activities, products and services of the business unit
  • Familiarity with client's policies, instructions and regulations related to investigating fraud cases
  • Familiarity with products, services, processes, requirements, and systems related to the business unit
  • Exposure to working with leadership and management in diverse and complex operational environments
  • Advanced knowledge of client's functions, philosophy, operations and organizational objectives
