What is fractional merchandising?

Fractional merchandising is a service model where a company hires a merchandising professional or team on a part-time or as-needed basis instead of employing them full-time. This approach allows businesses, especially smaller brands or retailers, to access expert merchandising skills—such as product placement, inventory optimization, and sales analysis—while controlling costs. Fractional merchandisers work with multiple clients, providing flexibility and specialized knowledge tailored to each client's needs. This can help companies improve their in-store or online product performance without the overhead of a full-time hire.

How does a Fractional Merchandising role typically integrate with in-house teams and external partners?

As a Fractional Merchandiser, you will often work closely with in-house product, marketing, and sales teams, as well as external vendors or consultants. The nature of the role means you may be brought in for specific projects or during peak periods, so clear communication and adaptability are crucial. You'll collaborate on tasks like assortment planning, product launches, and performance analysis, often bringing an outside perspective to optimize merchandising strategies. Building strong relationships and quickly understanding company culture and goals are key to ensuring your contributions are effective and valued.

To thrive as a Fractional Merchandising Specialist, you need a strong background in retail merchandising, inventory management, and trend analysis, often supported by experience in e-commerce or brick-and-mortar settings. Familiarity with merchandising software, POS systems, and data analytics tools such as Excel or Tableau is typically required. • Monitor integration health, troubleshoot sync issues, and drive resolution across systems.
  • Maintain chart of account mappings, departments, classes, and locations as business needs evolve.
  • Reconcile AP subledger activity between Ramp and NetSuite and support month-end close activities.
Automation, Documentation & Enablement
  • Map, redesign, and automate finance and AP workflows to improve efficiency, scalability, and controls.
  • Leverage AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot to accelerate documentation, workflow analysis, troubleshooting, and automation design.
  • Develop and maintain SOPs for Ramp, NetSuite, and finance systems integrations.
  • Train finance and AP teams, provide systems support, and deliver a Finance Systems & Automation Roadmap that prioritizes future improvements.
Cross Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Accounting and Accounts Payable to optimize procure-to-pay processes and improve operational efficiency.
  • Work with Technology and Systems teams to maintain integrations, resolve data issues, and support NetSuite migration activities.
  • Collaborate across Finance, Operations, external implementation partners, and software vendors to ensure scalable systems, accurate financial reporting, and successful project execution.
Qualifications
  • 4+ years of experience administering finance, accounting, or AP systems.
  • Hands-on experience with Ramp and NetSuite, including configuration, administration, and integration management.
  • Strong systems, process improvement, documentation, and project management skills.
  • Ability to analyze workflows, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement scalable automation solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally, manage complex systems, and drive projects independently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NetSuite Administrator certification, SuiteFoundation certification, or equivalent expertise.
  • Experience with SuiteScript, SQL, saved searches, scripting, or advanced NetSuite customization.
  • Experience in DTC, e-commerce, retail, or high-volume AP environments.
