As a Frac Engineer, your daily responsibilities typically include designing and planning hydraulic fracturing jobs, monitoring ongoing operations at well sites, and analyzing post-job data to optimize future processes. You will work closely with field crews, geologists, and other engineers to ensure safe and efficient execution of each stage of the frac process. The role often requires troubleshooting equipment or procedure issues on-site, maintaining detailed operational records, and ensuring all activities comply with safety and environmental regulations. Collaboration and clear communication are essential, as you will regularly relay findings and recommendations to both field teams and management.
To excel as a Frac Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering (typically petroleum, chemical, or mechanical), strong analytical skills, and practical field experience. Familiarity with hydraulic fracturing software, real-time data monitoring tools, and relevant safety certifications such as H2S and well control are commonly required. Effective communication, teamwork, and the ability to adapt quickly in fast-paced, often remote environments are important soft skills. These competencies are critical for ensuring safe, efficient, and successful fracturing operations in the oil and gas industry.
A Frac Engineer, or Fracturing Engineer, specializes in hydraulic fracturing operations to enhance oil and gas production. They design, plan, and oversee the execution of fracturing treatments, ensuring efficiency and safety while maximizing reservoir output. Their role involves analyzing geological data, selecting appropriate fluids and proppants, and monitoring real-time treatment data to optimize performance. Additionally, they collaborate with field teams and other engineers to troubleshoot issues and improve operational techniques.

Field based assignments typically include: Drill Site Representatives for on-site drilling operations including exploratory wells and development wells, and/or Well Site Representatives for on-site frac spreads and well intervention operations on producing wells. Office assignments can be: drilling engineer, completions engineer, and/or well intervention engineer. Typical responsibilities for drilling engineering include: cost estimation, bit and drill string design, casing and cement design, and mud program design. Typical responsibilities for completions engineering include: cost estimation, well completion design including fracture or sand control design, well completion fluid recommendation, production tubing string design and effective nodal analysis, including understanding the integrated production system to effectively optimize production. Typical responsibilities for well intervention engineering include: designing, planning, supporting, and supervising well intervention and completion procedures, applying technology and innovation in remediating wells the use of coiled tubing and snubbing units.
As part of your development, you will participate in the Wells Horizons program. Horizons is an employee development program designed to accelerate the knowledge, skills and self-confidence of Chevron's new workforce.
