How much do fplc jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for fplc in the United States is $69,125.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $57,000.00 and $78,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical challenges faced by FPLC operators and how can they be addressed?

FPLC (Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography) operators frequently encounter challenges such as maintaining consistent sample purity, troubleshooting equipment issues, and optimizing separation protocols for different proteins. To address these, it's important to develop strong problem-solving skills, stay up-to-date with equipment maintenance, and collaborate closely with research scientists to tailor protocols. Regular calibration of instruments and thorough documentation can greatly reduce errors and improve efficiency in the lab.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPLC specialist?

To thrive as an FPLC Specialist, you need a solid background in biochemistry, protein purification techniques, and a relevant science degree. Familiarity with chromatography systems such as ÄKTA, and experience with software like Unicorn for method development and data analysis, are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate purification processes, reliable results, and efficient collaboration in research or biomanufacturing environments.

What is an FPLC?

FPLC stands for Fast Protein Liquid Chromatography, a technique used to separate and purify proteins from complex mixtures. An FPLC operator is responsible for setting up, running, and maintaining the FPLC system, preparing samples, monitoring purification runs, and analyzing collected fractions. They ensure the equipment operates correctly, troubleshoot issues, and maintain accurate records of purification protocols and results. FPLC operators often work in research labs, biotechnology companies, or pharmaceutical settings where purified proteins are needed for downstream applications.

What is the difference between Fplc vs Fpso?

AspectFplcFpso
Primary FunctionFabricates and installs pipelines and subsea equipment for offshore oil and gasProcesses and stores oil and gas on offshore platforms, then transfers to tankers
Work EnvironmentOffshore and onshore construction sitesOffshore platforms and processing facilities
Required CertificationsOffshore safety and welding certificationsOffshore safety, welding, and process operation certifications

Fplc (Floating Production, Liquefied Natural Gas, and Subsea Construction) specialists focus on installing subsea infrastructure, while Fpso (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) workers operate and maintain offshore production platforms. Both roles require offshore safety certifications and involve working in offshore environments, but their core responsibilities differ significantly in function and scope.

Overview

The Oncology Research group at Alnylam is seeking a highly motivated Senior Associate Scientist skilled in bioconjugation chemistry to join our growing interdisciplinary team aimed at developing RNAi therapeutics against cancer. The successful candidate will have hands-on expertise in the design and execution of protein conjugation experiments, as well as a strong working knowledge of the purification and characterization of protein conjugates with oligonucleotide or small molecule payloads. This position will work closely with colleagues in chemistry, biology and in vivo pharmacology to support various oncology drug discovery projects. The candidate must be motivated, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to work on a highly collaborative team.

This position is onsite and will be primarily located in Cambridge, MA.

Key Responsibilities

  • Independently plan and carry out protein conjugation experiments with oligonucleotide or other payloads to support in vitro and in vivo experiments.
  • Improve upon or develop purification methods for novel protein conjugates using FPLC, HPLC and TFF.
  • Design, synthesize and purify oligonucleotides modified with biorthogonal handles (e.g. maleimide, Azide, MeTz) for protein conjugation chemistry.
  • Develop automation and/or plate-based protocols for the high throughput generation of new protein conjugates.
  • Effectively troubleshoot synthetic and process challenges and independently come up with solutions.
  • Supports group by contributing to the maintenance of laboratory infrastructure and equipment.
  • Keep detailed and complete records in an electronic lab notebook and regularly communicate results to the team to progress drug discovery efforts.

Qualifications

  • BS/MS degree in Chemistry, Chemical Biology, or a related field with 3-5 years of hands-on industry experience in protein conjugation chemistry.
  • Deep expertise in biorthogonal chemistry with prior experience applying this knowledge to protein conjugation is required.
  • Experience working with antibody-oligonucleotide conjugates is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency in synthetic chemistry lab techniques and strong working knowledge of instrumentation such FPLC, analytical and prep HPLC (IEX, SEC, RP), LC-MS, TFF, UV-Vis spectrometry, etc.
  • Experience with automation and/or plate-based protocols to improve conjugate throughput is a plus.
  • Passionate about scientific discovery and eager to learn new skills and contribute to the success of the organization.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent communicator, execution-focused and team-oriented.
  • Good record keeping abilities to adequately document protocols and experimental data, experience with Benchling ELN is a plus.
