What is an FPGA software engineer?

FPGA Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement software and hardware solutions using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). They write code, often in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, to configure FPGAs for specific applications, such as signal processing or embedded systems. Their work involves both software programming and understanding of digital hardware, enabling the creation of custom hardware accelerators or processing units. These engineers collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate FPGAs into larger systems and ensure optimal performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA software engineer?

To thrive as an FPGA Software Engineer, you need expertise in digital design, VHDL/Verilog programming, and a solid background in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with FPGA development tools like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, and often a relevant certification, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in collaborating with teams and troubleshooting complex hardware-software integration issues. These abilities ensure efficient design, implementation, and optimization of FPGA solutions in high-performance computing and embedded systems.

What are some common challenges FPGA software engineers face when collaborating with hardware teams?

FPGA Software Engineers often work closely with hardware teams to ensure that designs are efficiently implemented and meet system requirements. One common challenge is aligning software logic with hardware constraints, such as timing, resource usage, and power consumption. Effective communication is key, as misunderstandings can lead to delays or design mismatches. Regular sync meetings, shared documentation, and iterative testing help bridge the gap and ensure successful integration.

What is the difference between Fpga Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectFpga Software EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related; knowledge of FPGA design toolsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related; experience with embedded systems
Work EnvironmentDesigning FPGA-based hardware solutions, coding in hardware description languages, testing FPGA prototypesDeveloping software for embedded devices, coding in C/C++, testing on hardware platforms
Industry UsageTelecommunications, aerospace, defense, high-speed data processingConsumer electronics, automotive, IoT devices, medical equipment

While both roles involve embedded systems and hardware-software integration, Fpga Software Engineers focus on FPGA hardware design and programming, whereas Embedded Software Engineers develop software for embedded devices. The roles often overlap in industries like aerospace and telecommunications but differ in technical focus and tools used.

Are FPGA Software Engineers in demand?

FPGA Software Engineers are in high demand due to the increasing use of FPGAs in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, and defense. Their skills in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, along with software development experience, are highly valued as companies seek to optimize performance and develop custom hardware solutions.

Job Title: FPGA EW Design Engineer

Job Code: 41806

Job Location: Salt lake City

Job Schedule: 9/80, employees work 9 out of 14 days- totaling 80 hours worked- and have every other Friday off

We are seeking an experienced FPGA Design Engineer to help develop advanced electronic warfare (EW) and wireless digital communications systems. Ideal candidates bring experience in EW, wireless communications, modems, and/or digital signal processing (DSP). You will contribute across the full design lifecycle, including proposals, requirements definition, RTL development, simulation, synthesis, place-and-route, verification and test, system integration, and field support. This role offers challenging technical work within a collaborative team of talented engineers and opportunities to work independently while leading small teams of technical contributors. Located in Salt Lake City, this position also offers access to exceptional year-round outdoor recreation and cultural experiences, supported by L3Harris's commitment to work-life balance.

Candidates with experience or education in one or more of the following areas are encouraged to apply:

  • Electronic warfare (EW)
  • Signal detection, classification, and identification
  • Radar systems and signal processing
  • Advanced digital signal processing (DSP) techniques
  • Digital modulation and demodulation
  • Forward error correction (FEC)
  • Machine learning
  • FPGA verification using simulation and unit testing
  • Experience developing in VHDL (preferred) or Verilog

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience
  • Current DOD clearance or the ability to aquire one.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or electrical engineering
  • Experience leading small engineering teams or technical contributors
  • Experience developing electronic support (ES) and/or electronic attack (EA) signal-processing capabilities
  • Experience implementing complex modem and/or DSP algorithms in FPGA-based programmable logic; comparable ASIC design experience is also applicable
  • Experience implementing industry-standard interfaces, such as 10/100/1000 Ethernet, SPI, UART, SDRAM, DDR3, JESD, and PCIe
  • Experience with FPGA simulation, synthesis, and implementation tools, such as ModelSim, Synplify, AMD Xilinx Vivado/ISE, and/or Intel Quartus
  • Experience with high-speed serial FPGA interfaces operating at 3 Gbps or greater
  • Experience achieving timing closure in large FPGA designs
  • Experience with high-level synthesis (HLS)
