What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA Software Engineer, you need expertise in digital design, VHDL/Verilog programming, and a solid background in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with FPGA development tools like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, and often a relevant certification, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in collaborating with teams and troubleshooting complex hardware-software integration issues. These abilities ensure efficient design, implementation, and optimization of FPGA solutions in high-performance computing and embedded systems.

What are FPGA Software Engineers?

FPGA Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement software and hardware solutions using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). They write code, often in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, to configure FPGAs for specific applications, such as signal processing or embedded systems. Their work involves both software programming and understanding of digital hardware, enabling the creation of custom hardware accelerators or processing units. These engineers collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate FPGAs into larger systems and ensure optimal performance.

What are some common challenges FPGA Software Engineers face when collaborating with hardware teams?

FPGA Software Engineers often work closely with hardware teams to ensure that designs are efficiently implemented and meet system requirements. One common challenge is aligning software logic with hardware constraints, such as timing, resource usage, and power consumption. Effective communication is key, as misunderstandings can lead to delays or design mismatches. Regular sync meetings, shared documentation, and iterative testing help bridge the gap and ensure successful integration.

Job description

Precise Systems delivers integrated, mission-ready solutions that advance warfighter readiness and strengthen our nation's most critical defense programs. Through the power of our combined capabilities, we provide deep expertise in Advanced Engineering; Digital Transformation; Electromagnetic Warfare; Interactive Training & Simulation; Physical Sciences Research; Platform Lifecycle Support; and Foreign Military Sales. Unified by decades of trusted performance and expanded through strategic growth, our team applies innovative technologies, engineering rigor, and customer-focused execution to solve complex challenges and accelerate mission success. Guided by our commitment to partnership, precision, and performance, we deliver the scalable solutions and technical excellence our customers depend on-today and into the future. We are seeking an experienced RF and Digital Circuit Engineer to support the design, development, integration, testing, troubleshooting, and sustainment of complex electronic systems. This position requires hands-on experience with radio-frequency systems, digital circuitry, embedded electronics, and electronic test equipment. The successful candidate will analyze system and circuit performance, diagnose hardware issues, develop technical solutions, and collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering and technical teams. The engineer may support new system development, existing-system modifications, production activities, laboratory testing, and lifecycle sustainment. This role requires in-person support. Duties: * Design, analyze, test, and troubleshoot RF, analog, and digital electronic circuits and subsystems. * Develop and evaluate circuit designs, schematics, block diagrams, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation. * Perform laboratory testing and system-level integration using oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, network analyzers, signal generators, logic analyzers, power meters, and other electronic test equipment. * Troubleshoot circuit cards, RF assemblies, digital interfaces, power supplies, communication systems, and related electronic hardware. * Analyze RF performance characteristics, including frequency response, signal integrity, gain, noise, impedance, modulation, filtering, and power output. * Evaluate digital circuitry, including processors, microcontrollers, field-programmable gate arrays, memory devices, data buses, and digital communication interfaces. * Support the development of test procedures, test plans, acceptance criteria, and automated or manual test solutions. * Conduct failure analysis and root-cause investigations and recommend corrective actions. * Support prototype development, system modifications, hardware upgrades, and engineering change activities. * Review technical data, drawings, specifications, and system requirements for accuracy and completeness. * Document test results, engineering analyses, technical recommendations, and design decisions. * Collaborate with systems, software, mechanical, test, manufacturing, logistics, and configuration-management personnel. * Provide technical guidance to engineering technicians and other team members. * Support technical reviews, customer meetings, design reviews, and program-status discussions. * Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable quality, safety, cybersecurity, configuration-management, and documentation requirements. Required Education: * Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline. Required Experience: * 3+ years of hands-on electronics troubleshooting and circuit analysis. * Professional experience designing, testing, integrating, or troubleshooting RF and digital electronic systems. * Working knowledge of RF principles, digital logic, electronic components, circuit analysis, and signal processing. * Experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics, circuit-card drawings, wiring diagrams, and technical specifications. * Hands-on experience with electronic laboratory and RF test equipment. * Ability to diagnose complex electronic hardware and system-level performance issues. * Strong technical writing, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. * Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary technical team. Preferred Qualifications: * Experience with RF simulation, circuit-design, printed-circuit-board design, or signal-integrity analysis tools. * Knowledge of FPGA, microcontroller, embedded-system, or firmware development. * Experience with high-speed digital interfaces and communication protocols. * Experience developing automated test equipment or test software using LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, C/C++, or similar tools. * Familiarity with electromagnetic interference and compatibility testing. * Experience with failure reporting, root-cause analysis, corrective-action processes, and configuration-controlled technical documentation. * Familiarity with Department of Defense engineering, acquisition, production, or sustainment environments. * Experience supporting military, aerospace, radar, communications, electronic-warfare, avionics, or other mission-critical electronic systems. * Active or previously held U.S. Government security clearance. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance. Due to the sensitivity of customer related requirements, U.S. Citizenship is required.
