Job description
With platforms in HVAC and Detection and Measurement, SPX Technologies builds innovative solutions that enable a safer, more efficient, sustainable world. Through our Rise talent development framework, we Reach, Identify, Strengthen, and Engage our employees to support them in their continued development. We're a global company with problem solvers, collaborators, and innovators, and our businesses build solutions that impact the world.
This is a position with WM Technologies, LLC and affiliate of SPX Enterprises, LLC, which manufactures and sells Weil-McLain® branded products. Weil-McLain® is a leading North American brand of hydronic comfort heating systems for residential, commercial, and institutional buildings since 1881.
How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)
SPX is a diverse team of unique individuals who all make an impact. As a Foundry Supervisor, you will provide frontline leadership for daily foundry operations, ensuring employees work safely and production requirements are achieved while meeting expectations for quality, delivery, cost, and productivity. You will direct and coordinate hourly employees engaged across the foundry manufacturing process, including coremaking, molding, melting, pouring, casting finishing, and related operations.
This is a hands-on leadership role in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment where strong floor presence, technical understanding, and effective people leadership are essential. You will work closely with the Foundry Superintendent and cross-functional partners in Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, Machine Shop, and other operations functions to resolve production issues, improve equipment and process performance, develop employees, and consistently produce high-quality ferrous castings.
What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)
While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:
- Foundry Operations & Production Execution
- Supervise and coordinate daily activities of hourly employees across assigned foundry operations, including coremaking, molding, furnace charging and operation, melting, pouring, shakeout, cleaning, grinding, sandblasting, and casting finishing activities.
- Direct daily production activities to achieve established safety, quality, delivery, productivity, and cost objectives.
- Coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and production priorities to maintain efficient workflow and achieve production schedules.
- Monitor production throughout the shift, identify operating constraints or disruptions, and coordinate appropriate actions to maintain production flow.
- Examine materials, castings, and products at various stages of processing to ensure conformance with established quality and functional requirements.
- Coordinate effectively across core, molding, melt, pouring, finishing, and downstream operations to maintain steady workflow and minimize production interruptions.
- Provide technical and operational assistance to employees and other operations personnel as needed.
- Respond effectively to changing production requirements, equipment availability, staffing conditions, and customer demand.
- People Leadership & Employee Development
- Provide direct leadership, supervision, coaching, and performance management to assigned hourly employees.
- Establish clear expectations for safety, quality, productivity, attendance, conduct, and job performance and maintain accountability for results.
- Direct hourly employees consistent with established work practices, plant rules, company policies, and applicable collective bargaining agreement requirements.
- Promote positive and productive working relationships among hourly employees, union representatives, management, Quality, Maintenance, and other departments.
- Provide employees with training, coaching, and development necessary to safely and effectively perform assigned responsibilities.
- Identify employee training needs and support cross-training and development of workforce capability across foundry operations.
- Address employee performance and conduct concerns appropriately and consistently in partnership with Human Resources and the Foundry Superintendent.
- Process and approve applicable attendance, vacation, and timekeeping records for assigned employees.
- Promote and model SPX Leadership Standards through daily interactions, decisions, and leadership practices.
3. Safety, Environmental & Quality
- Maintain a strong floor presence and reinforce safe work practices throughout assigned foundry operations.
- Enforce adherence to established safety procedures, personal protective equipment requirements, and safe operating practices associated with molten metal, high-temperature processes, heavy equipment, material handling, and other foundry hazards.
- Promote and maintain strong housekeeping and workplace organization standards throughout assigned areas.
- Participate in safety observations, audits, incident investigations, risk assessments, and corrective actions as appropriate.
- Support environmental compliance associated with foundry operations, including dust collection, emissions controls, material handling, and waste-management practices.
- Coordinate with Quality personnel to ensure castings meet or exceed established specifications and functional requirements.
- Assist in identifying and resolving process conditions contributing to casting defects, scrap, rework, or other quality concerns.
- Reinforce adherence to established process parameters, work instructions, quality standards, and operating procedures.
- Foundry Process & Equipment Support
- Apply practical knowledge of foundry processes and equipment to recognize operating abnormalities, production constraints, equipment concerns, and potential process issues.
- Work closely with Maintenance personnel to communicate equipment conditions, establish production priorities, support troubleshooting, and coordinate repairs while minimizing production disruption.
- Partner with Maintenance on recurring equipment issues and provide operational input to support equipment reliability and effective preventive maintenance.
- Maintain working knowledge of foundry equipment and processes that may include horizontal molding systems, green sand systems, no-bake or chemically bonded sand processes, coremaking equipment, induction furnaces, pouring systems, material handling equipment, casting finishing equipment, and related support systems.
- Support proper operating practices associated with furnace systems, ladles, refractories, molding equipment, sand systems, and other foundry assets within the scope of assigned operations.
- Coordinate with Engineering, Maintenance, Quality, and operations leadership when equipment or process conditions require technical support or corrective action.
- Support equipment startups, shutdowns, process changes, repairs, and other operational activities as required.
- Production Control, Inventory & Reporting
- Enter, review, and verify required daily production and cast iron inventory transactions to maintain accurate records.
- Assist with monthly, year-end, and other required inventory and cycle-count activities.
- Monitor and communicate production performance, raw material usage, scrap, downtime, equipment performance, and other operational measures as applicable.
- Generate and distribute required daily, weekly, and monthly production and operational reports in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate records including production reports, inventory information, safety documentation, employee performance records, and time and attendance information.
- Utilize ERP systems and other business technologies to support production reporting, inventory accuracy, performance monitoring, and issue identification.
- Operational Effectiveness & Cross-Functional Partnership
- Identify and act upon opportunities to strengthen safety, quality, productivity, equipment performance, material utilization, workflow, and cost performance.
- Analyze recurring production, equipment, quality, and workflow issues and partner with appropriate resources to develop practical, sustainable solutions.
- Support implementation of standardized work, Lean manufacturing principles, workplace organization, and other operating practices that improve process stability and performance.
- Work collaboratively with Maintenance, Quality, Engineering, Machine Shop, Shipping, Human Resources, and other departments to achieve operational and business objectives.
- Participate in cross-functional problem-solving activities, projects, and operational initiatives.
- Support implementation and sustainment of approved process, equipment, and workflow changes.
- Participate in other projects and responsibilities supporting the overall goals of the Foundry and organization.
