Founding Product Manager information

What is a founding product manager?

A Founding Product Manager is an early team member, often one of the first hires, responsible for shaping the product vision and strategy at a startup. They work closely with the founders to define the product roadmap, gather user feedback, and prioritize features to help achieve product-market fit. Unlike traditional product managers, Founding Product Managers often wear multiple hats, contributing to areas like user research, design, and even marketing. Their decisions can significantly influence the trajectory of the company, making this a highly impactful and entrepreneurial role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding product manager?

To thrive as a Founding Product Manager, you need strong product strategy, market analysis, and cross-functional leadership skills, typically backed by experience in product management or startup environments. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Figma, analytics platforms, and agile methodologies is commonly required. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and entrepreneurial mindset are vital soft skills for this role. These capabilities are crucial for driving early-stage product success, aligning diverse teams, and quickly iterating in dynamic startup settings.

What unique challenges can a founding product manager expect when building products in an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Product Manager, you’ll often face the challenge of working with limited resources and ambiguous requirements, as early-stage startups typically have evolving priorities and smaller teams. You’ll likely wear multiple hats, closely collaborating with founders, engineers, and designers to define the product vision and quickly iterate on feedback. This environment demands strong adaptability, proactive problem-solving, and a willingness to validate assumptions through rapid experimentation. Being comfortable with change and uncertainty is essential, but these challenges also offer the unique opportunity to shape the company’s product strategy and culture from the ground up.

What is the difference between Founding Product Manager vs Product Manager?

Job description

Description:

Hyper is looking for an experienced Product Manager to help build the product function from the ground up. HyperSpace is already in the hands of users, and our next chapter is about deepening the product for the internal-facing teams who rely on it every day. You will be one of the people who defines how we decide what to build, how we build it, and how we know it worked.

This is a builder's role. You will take an idea and bring it to life—turning ambiguity into a clear plan, working shoulder-to-shoulder with a small team to define what we need to do and how we'll accomplish it, and filling the gaps the rest of us miss. If you like owning outcomes end to end and setting the standard for how product gets done, this is for you.

Core Responsibilities

  • Own the product lifecycle for the internal-facing HyperSpace experience—from early idea to shipped, adopted feature
  • Work inside a small team with engineering, design, and internal stakeholders to define the problem, the solution, and the smallest version worth building
  • Turn ambiguity into a plan by writing clear, sequenced plans including scope, milestones, dependencies, and success criteria, and keep them honest as things change
  • Talk to users constantly with the internal teams who use HyperSpace, translating their day-to-day pain into prioritized, well-framed product work
  • Own and manage the product roadmap, balancing near-term wins against longer-term bets, communicating the "why" behind sequencing, and keeping it current as priorities shift
  • Define success metrics that measure whether what was shipped solved the problem, and act on what the data tells you

Additional Responsibilities

  • Help build the product function as Hyper grows, including the rituals, roadmap, prioritization framework, product specifications, and decision-making processes
  • Add what's missing by spotting risks, edge cases, and open questions others overlook, and driving them to resolution before they become issues

What You'll Be Doing Day-to-Day

  • Meeting with internal HyperSpace users to understand business challenges and workflow needs
  • Collaborating with engineering and design to define product requirements and delivery plans
  • Writing product specifications, project plans, milestones, and success criteria
  • Prioritizing and maintaining the product roadmap as business priorities evolve
  • Tracking feature adoption, product performance, and user feedback to guide future enhancements
  • Identifying risks, dependencies, and opportunities to improve the product development process
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of product management experience shipping software products
  • Experience building 0-to-1 or early-stage products where product processes were established alongside the product itself
  • Demonstrated track record of taking ideas from concept through launch and adoption
  • Strong product judgment with the ability to prioritize effectively and make difficult trade-off decisions
  • Experience working closely with engineering and design teams in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience defining product metrics and using data to guide decision-making
  • Strong ownership mindset with the ability to identify and solve problems proactively

Preferred

  • Experience building products or tools for internal-facing or operational teams
  • Experience working in fast-growing startup or founding team environments
  • Technical fluency with the ability to understand engineering trade-offs
  • Experience establishing product management processes, roadmaps, or planning frameworks from scratch

Why Hyper?

Hyper Solutions is building technology that powers the next generation of mission-critical infrastructure. HyperSpace is a strategic platform that enables internal teams to operate more efficiently and scale alongside the company's rapid growth. This role offers the opportunity to shape both the product and the product organization while working alongside a highly collaborative team building software that has a direct impact on the business.

Compensation

The anticipated minimum hiring range for this role is $140,000 - $160,000 per year plus bonus. Actual salary varies due to factors that may include, but are not limited to, relevant experience, skills, certifications, and location. This hire may also be eligible for discretionary bonus or other incentive compensation. Variable compensation may depend on various factors, such as individual and organizational performance.

In addition to competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, including employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage and a 401(k) with company match, Hyper offers opportunities for professional development, career growth, and advancement as the company continues to expand.

Location

Onsite in Richmond, VA preferred. Will also consider remote candidates based on location and business needs.
