What is a founding full stack engineer?

A Founding Full Stack Engineer is an early, core technical team member at a startup who is responsible for building both the front-end and back-end of the company's product. This role goes beyond typical engineering, often involving product decisions, architecture design, and collaborating directly with the founders. Founding Full Stack Engineers help shape the company's culture, technical direction, and can have significant equity stake. Their work is crucial in taking the business from idea to launch, often in a fast-paced, resource-limited environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Founding Full Stack Engineer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end development, deep knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Ruby, and experience with scalable architectures, often backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (React, Node.js, Django), version control systems (Git), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), and DevOps practices is typically required. Strong problem-solving, initiative, adaptability, and excellent communication distinguish successful candidates, enabling effective collaboration in a startup environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for building robust products rapidly and influencing the company's technical direction from its early stages.

What unique challenges might a founding full stack engineer face when joining an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Full Stack Engineer at an early-stage startup, you'll often balance building core product features with setting up foundational technical infrastructure. This role typically requires wearing multiple hats, from architecting systems and writing code to making critical technology decisions and collaborating closely with non-technical founders. You may encounter challenges such as ambiguous requirements, shifting priorities, and limited resources, but you'll also have significant influence over the company's technical direction. The dynamic environment encourages rapid learning and offers accelerated career growth, particularly for those who thrive in fast-paced, collaborative settings.

Job description

About Gamut
Gamut is building the agent workforce. We're a seed-stage team backed by Human Capital (SpaceX, Snowflake, Anduril) building a platform that allows non-engineers to build AI employees that get the whole job done. Early customers are already automating several hours of their workday across their most complicated tasks in sales, marketing, ops, etc.
We're hiring people who want to build, not manage. If you want to work on hard problems with a small team that ships, this is the place.
The Role
As a founding full-stack engineer, you'll own the application layer of our platform - from observability and permissions to the control plane and user-facing dashboards that make our agent infrastructure usable and delightful. You'll work across the stack, turning complex systems into simple, powerful tools for developers.
You will:
  • Build the agent interface that non-technical users interact with daily, where they assign tasks, watch agents work, and review results.
  • Design and implement the backend systems that orchestrate agent sessions, enforce permissions and guardrails, and capture activity logs.
  • Lead architecture decisions around system design, scalability, and reliability.
  • Lead & influence product decisions.
  • Work directly with early customers to understand pain points and shape our roadmap.
  • Own features end to end - from concept through design, implementation, launch, and iteration.
  • This role is in-office, 5 days/week, based in San Francisco.

What We Are Looking For
We're looking for product-minded engineers who love building polished, high-leverage infrastructure and tools. You should be comfortable working across the stack and owning large, impactful projects from day one.
You might be a great fit if you have experience with:
  • Building full-stack web applications with modern frameworks (React, Next.js, TypeScript, Node.js, etc.)
  • Shipping fast and iterating quickly
  • Deploying and scaling applications in the cloud (AWS, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
  • Thriving in high-agency, high-ownership environments

Benefits
  • Competitive salary, based on experience level (Annual compensation range: $50,000 to $500,000)
  • Meaningful equity
  • Health, dental, and vision coverage
  • Opportunity to be a founding member of a growing company
