What is a Founding Full Stack Engineer?

A Founding Full Stack Engineer is an early, core technical team member at a startup who is responsible for building both the front-end and back-end of the company's product. This role goes beyond typical engineering, often involving product decisions, architecture design, and collaborating directly with the founders. Founding Full Stack Engineers help shape the company's culture, technical direction, and can have significant equity stake. Their work is crucial in taking the business from idea to launch, often in a fast-paced, resource-limited environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Founding Full Stack Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Founding Full Stack Engineer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end development, deep knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Ruby, and experience with scalable architectures, often backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (React, Node.js, Django), version control systems (Git), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), and DevOps practices is typically required. Strong problem-solving, initiative, adaptability, and excellent communication distinguish successful candidates, enabling effective collaboration in a startup environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for building robust products rapidly and influencing the company's technical direction from its early stages.

What unique challenges might a Founding Full Stack Engineer face when joining an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Full Stack Engineer at an early-stage startup, you'll often balance building core product features with setting up foundational technical infrastructure. This role typically requires wearing multiple hats, from architecting systems and writing code to making critical technology decisions and collaborating closely with non-technical founders. Job description

Building the modern, human-centric recommendation systems
Whether it is recommending videos to watch on TikTok, things to buy on Amazon, or people to date on Tinder, recommendation engines are the drivers of the modern digital economy. However, the technology to power these recommendations has only been available to a select few big tech companies so far. We are on a mission to enable all companies in the world to harness this technology and build delightful products for their customers.
And we are looking for our first product engineer to shape and build our core product. You will be working shoulder-to-shoulder with co-founders and a small team of 3-5 people. You will own a massive surface area and have a huge impact on the company.
What we are looking for
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with deep care for solving customer problems
  • Ability to independently develop, own and execute on a roadmap
  • 2+ years of industry experience as a software engineer with full-stack experience
  • Curiosity to work in a new field - previous experience of machine learning or infrastructure is not required

What to expect
  • Meaningful Work: Your team directly enables and accelerates the innovation of data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
  • Impact: You will shape the future of an industry and your work will power thousands of companies' products for hundreds of millions of people
  • Freedom & Responsibility: We know better than to pigeonhole great people into narrow roles. You will be able to use your judgement to make the company better as you see fit without permission.
  • Inclusivity: We embrace different backgrounds, perspectives, and styles because it helps us make better decisions.
  • Stunning Colleagues & Top-of-Market Compensation: You will be part of a high-performance team.

We encourage people from all backgrounds to apply. We are well funded and backed by top-tier venture capital firms and some of the most prominent leaders in the tech industry.
