Founding Data Engineer information

What are the unique challenges and opportunities of being a founding data engineer at an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Data Engineer, you'll face the challenge of building data infrastructure from scratch, often with limited resources and evolving requirements. You’ll work closely with founders and cross-functional teams to define data strategies, implement pipelines, and ensure data quality. This role offers significant influence over technical decisions and architecture, and you'll likely wear multiple hats, contributing to both backend engineering and data analytics. The fast-paced environment fosters rapid skill development and provides substantial opportunities for career growth as the company scales.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Founding Data Engineer, you need strong expertise in data architecture, database design, and software engineering, often backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), ETL frameworks, programming languages (such as Python or Scala), and data warehousing tools is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, adaptability, and collaboration skills set standout candidates apart in this role. These abilities are crucial for building scalable data systems and shaping the technical foundation of an early-stage company.

The main difference between a Founding Data Engineer and a Data Engineer lies in their work environment and responsibilities. Founding Data Engineers typically work in startups, handling broad tasks and building data infrastructure from scratch, while Data Engineers in established companies focus on specific data pipelines within structured teams. Both roles require similar technical skills and educational backgrounds, but their scope and context differ significantly.

What is a founding data engineer?

Founding Data Engineers are among the first technical hires at a startup, responsible for designing, building, and scaling the company's data infrastructure from the ground up. They work closely with founders and early team members to define data architecture, set up data pipelines, and ensure data quality and accessibility for product development and business insights. This role often requires a blend of software engineering, data modeling, and strategic decision-making skills, as well as the flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing priorities in a startup environment.

Job description

About the role

DevRev is looking for a Founding Sales Engineering Lead for Public Sector to help build our federal, defense, and public sector technical go-to-market from the ground up. This is a rare opportunity to shape how a next generation AI platform enters the public sector. You will partner directly with the Public Sector GTM leadership to define technical strategy, develop mission focused solutions, and build the SE organization that will support federal civilian agencies, the Department of Defense, and other public sector customers.

The role is ideal for someone who enjoys building from zero, thrives in ambiguity, and wants to have an outsized impact on how AI platforms are adopted in government.

What you will do

Build the Public Sector Technical Motion

  • Partner with Public Sector sales leadership to establish the technical go-to-market strategy.
  • Define how DevRev's platform maps to government mission use cases.
  • Develop repeatable solution patterns for federal agencies and defense organizations.
  • Shape how DevRev positions its platform in regulated environments.

Lead Complex Technical Sales

  • Act as the primary technical authority for public sector opportunities.
  • Support strategic deals across Federal Civilian, Defense, and other public sector segments.
  • Design and deliver compelling product demonstrations aligned to mission outcomes.
  • Guide customers through technical architecture and integration discussions.

Create Mission Focused Demonstrations

  • Build demo environments and synthetic datasets that reflect real government workflows.
  • Examples may include:
    • Defense readiness and operational workflows.
    • Public sector case management and mission operations.
    • Knowledge retrieval across institutional documentation.
    • Secure AI workflows with structured and unstructured data.

Influence Product and Architecture

  • Serve as the voice of the public sector customer internally.
  • Provide product feedback on compliance, architecture, and deployment requirements.
  • Work closely with product and engineering to align capabilities with government needs.

Support Compliance and Secure Deployments

  • Assist in defining DevRev architecture for regulated environments.
  • Partner with internal teams on FedRAMP strategy and security requirements.
  • Help customers understand secure deployment models and data governance considerations.

Build the Future SE Organization

  • Recruit and mentor future public sector SEs.
  • Establish technical playbooks and demo standards.
  • Define the SE operating model for public sector growth.
What we are looking for
  • 8+ years experience in Sales Engineering or Solutions Architecture.
  • Experience supporting Federal Civilian, Defense, or Public Sector customers.
  • Strong ability to translate complex technology into mission outcomes.
  • Experience delivering technical demonstrations and proofs of concept.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Cloud platforms.
    • AI or data platforms.
    • API driven architectures.
  • Ability to operate in an early stage, high growth environment.
  • Security Clearance Preferred.

Bonus experience:

  • Working with AI, data platforms, or developer platforms.
  • Exposure to FedRAMP, GovCloud, or regulated environments.
  • Experience building demo frameworks or technical enablement content.
Why this role is unique
  • You will help define DevRev's entire Public Sector technical strategy.
  • You will work directly with leadership to build the SE organization.
  • You will shape how AI platforms are adopted across government.
  • You will have the opportunity to grow into Head of Public Sector SE.

Location: United States (Remote) with travel to customers as needed.

Impact: The Founding Public Sector SE Lead will play a critical role in helping government organizations adopt AI in a secure and responsible way. This role will define the technical foundation for DevRev's public sector growth.
