How much do formulation lipid nanoparticle jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 9, 2026, the average yearly pay for formulation lipid nanoparticle in the United States is $119,503.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $101,500.00 and $150,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a formulation lipid nanoparticle specialist?

Formulation Lipid Nanoparticle specialists are scientists or engineers who design and develop lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for the delivery of drugs, vaccines, or genetic material. They work on optimizing the composition, stability, and effectiveness of LNPs to ensure safe and efficient delivery of therapeutic agents into target cells. Their expertise is crucial in pharmaceutical research and manufacturing, especially for advanced therapies like mRNA vaccines and gene therapies.

What are some common challenges faced when developing lipid nanoparticle (LNP) formulations, and how can these be addressed in a lab environment?

A key challenge in developing lipid nanoparticle formulations is achieving consistent particle size and encapsulation efficiency, which are critical for drug delivery applications. Variability can arise due to differences in lipid ratios, mixing techniques, and process parameters. To address this, team members often work closely with analytical chemists to optimize protocols, standardize procedures, and troubleshoot issues such as aggregation or low yield. Regular collaboration and clear documentation help ensure reproducibility and successful scale-up from bench to production.

What is the difference between Formulation Lipid Nanoparticle vs Formulation Scientist?

AspectFormulation Lipid NanoparticleFormulation Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or related fieldsBachelor's or Master's in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or related fields
Work EnvironmentLaboratories focused on nanoparticle formulation and drug deliveryResearch and development labs, manufacturing, or quality control
Industry UsageSpecialized in lipid-based drug delivery systemsBroader role in formulation development across various drug types

Formulation Lipid Nanoparticle specialists focus specifically on developing lipid-based nanocarriers for drug delivery, requiring expertise in nanoparticle technology. Formulation Scientists have a broader scope, working on various formulation types, including lipid nanoparticles, but with less specialization. Both roles often require similar educational backgrounds and work in related environments, but their focus areas differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a formulation lipid nanoparticle scientist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Formulation Lipid Nanoparticle Scientist, you need a solid background in chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, or related fields, often supported by an advanced degree and experience in nanoparticle formulation. Familiarity with analytical instruments (HPLC, DLS, LC-MS), nanoparticle synthesis equipment, and regulatory standards is crucial, along with knowledge of relevant laboratory software. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help in managing complex experiments and collaborating across multidisciplinary teams. These competencies ensure the successful design, optimization, and scale-up of lipid nanoparticle formulations for drug delivery and therapeutic applications.

Job Description

AtGileadour pursuit of a healthier world for all people has yielded a cure for hepatitis C, revolutionary improvements in HIV treatment and prevention as well as advancements in therapies for viral and inflammatory diseases and certain cancers.

We set and achieve bold ambitions in our fight against the world's most devastating diseases, united in our commitment to confronting the largest public health challenges of our day and improving the lives of patients for generations to come.

As a Senior Scientist, Discovery Sciences & Technologies at Gilead, you will be an integral member of the LNP Center of Excellence dedicated to mRNA-LNP discovery research for therapeutic applications, while also establishing strategic partnerships and driving scientific innovation.

This individual will work closely with internal research functions and external collaborators to advance transformational mRNA-LNP therapeutics into clinical development for patients.

OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Senior Scientist to advance our lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology within the LNP center of excellence and the Discovery Sciences and Technologies (DST) Department. This pivotal role will enable and drive innovation in mRNA-LNP-based drug delivery across our Virology, Oncology, and Inflammation therapeutic areas.

DST Department members are responsible for the design and execution of rigorous, quantitative, and physiologically relevant in vitro biochemical and functional cellular assays.
