Formation Evaluation information

What is the difference between Formation Evaluation vs Well Logging Engineer?

AspectFormation EvaluationWell Logging Engineer
Primary FocusAssessing subsurface rock properties and hydrocarbon potentialDesigning, deploying, and interpreting well logs
Required CredentialsGeology, petrophysics, or geoscience degrees; certifications in formation evaluationPetrophysics, geoscience degrees; logging technology certifications
Work EnvironmentOffshore/onshore drilling sites, laboratoriesDrilling rigs, logging units, laboratories
Industry UsageOil and gas exploration, reservoir characterizationWell data acquisition, formation analysis

While both roles involve subsurface analysis, Formation Evaluation focuses on interpreting data to assess reservoir potential, whereas Well Logging Engineers specialize in deploying and interpreting well logs to gather subsurface information. Understanding these distinctions helps professionals and employers align skills with industry needs.

Job description

Primary responsibilities include the coordination of petrophysical data collection; formation evaluation and running petrophysical models; and working with multidisciplinary teams on exploration / development / production program execution and reservoir characterization. Data collection activities includes planning and execution of formation evaluation programs and procedures for coring, wireline logging, data quality control, computer processing, and data management. Strengths include Integration/calibration of core and wireline log data to provide volumetric determination, lithological determination, and mechanical rock properties for horizontal well targeting and 'frac' height estimation. Reservoir characterization expertise for asset valuations is desirable.

This position requires a minimum of 5+ years of experience performing petrophysical analysis on unconventional resource plays. Desired skillsets include formation evaluation planning; drilling well surveillance, including well disposition; and completion recommendations. Good communication skills and working seamlessly in multi-disciplinary teams is necessary. Capable of mentoring other geoscientists and team members in petrophysical methods and best practices.

A Bachelor's Degree is required in a related field of study such as geology, physics, petroleum engineering or geological engineering. Proficient in use of petrophysical software such as IP and Powerlog is preferred.

Position will be filled at a level commensurate with experience.
