How much do wetland science jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 21, 2026, the average yearly pay for wetland science in the United States is $89,403.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $59,500.00 and $121,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is wetland science?

Wetland science is the study of wetland ecosystems, which are areas where water covers the soil or is present near the surface for varying periods of time. Wetland scientists research the biology, chemistry, and ecology of these unique environments to understand their functions, monitor their health, and guide conservation or restoration efforts. Their work is crucial for protecting biodiversity, managing natural resources, and mitigating environmental challenges such as flooding and water pollution.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a wetland scientist?

To thrive as a Wetland Scientist, you need a strong background in environmental science, ecology, hydrology, and soil science, often supported by a relevant degree and field experience. Familiarity with GIS software, wetland delineation protocols, and regulatory frameworks such as the Clean Water Act is typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for conducting fieldwork and collaborating with stakeholders. These competencies ensure accurate wetland assessments, regulatory compliance, and effective conservation or restoration outcomes.

What are some typical challenges wetland scientists face when conducting fieldwork?

Wetland scientists often encounter challenges related to difficult terrain, unpredictable weather, and seasonal changes that can impact accessibility and data collection. Working in wetlands requires specialized equipment and safety precautions due to waterlogged soils, dense vegetation, and potential encounters with wildlife or insects. Additionally, coordinating with landowners, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary teams is common, requiring strong communication and adaptability. These challenges make fieldwork both rewarding and demanding, emphasizing the need for flexibility and problem-solving skills.

How do you become a professional wetland scientist?

To become a professional wetland scientist, typically a bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field is required, often followed by a master's degree for advanced roles. Gaining experience through internships or fieldwork, developing skills in wetland assessment and GIS tools, and obtaining certifications such as the Certified Wetland Scientist credential from the Society of Wetland Scientists can enhance career prospects.

How much do wetland scientists make?

Wetland scientists typically earn a median annual salary of around $50,000 to $70,000, depending on experience, education, and location. Entry-level positions may start lower, while those with advanced degrees or specialized skills can earn higher salaries, especially if working in consulting or research roles.

What does a wetland science do?

A wetland scientist studies and monitors wetland ecosystems to assess their health, functions, and biodiversity. They may conduct field surveys, collect data, and develop conservation plans using tools like GIS and environmental sampling techniques. Their work supports wetland preservation, restoration, and sustainable management efforts.

Job description

Overview

Lynker Corporation is a leading provider of innovative solutions in weather and climate science. With a commitment to excellence and a passion for innovation, Lynker leverages cutting-edge technologies and scientific expertise to support the creation and delivery of improved operational weather forecasts. As part of our ongoing growth and expansion, we are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Wetland Scientist to join our growing team.

Mapping wetlands accurately across large areas is hard, and the maps are only as trustworthy as the validation behind them. We are hiring a Senior Wetland Scientist to lead that work, combining wetland science, remote sensing, and cloud-native geospatial computing to produce defensible wetland products across regional to national extents. The role spans model development, large-area production, validation and uncertainty, and technical leadership.

You will sit close to our modeling and geospatial teams, turning wetland science into methods that run reliably over large areas. The strongest candidates pair wetland and ecological expertise with strong geospatial and coding skills, and are comfortable moving between the underlying science, the data pipeline, and validation of the resulting maps.

Responsibilities

Duties of the Senior Wetland Scientist will include the following:

  • Mapping at scale: produce, improve, and maintain versioned wetland maps across large regional to national extents.
  • Cloud-native geospatial: build and run mapping and modeling workflows using cloud-native geospatial tools, formats, and storage.
  • Wetland modeling: implement, adapt, and improve existing and new models for wetland potential and for wetland boundary and extent.
  • Data integration: integrate LiDAR-derived elevation, hydrology, imagery, soils, and existing wetland inventories into reproducible modeling pipelines.
  • Validation & QA: design validation against reference data, quantify uncertainty, and quality-control wetland maps for accuracy and consistency.
  • Communication: document methods and results, contribute to reports and proposals, and partner with the Platform, Modeling, and Applications teams that scale and serve your products.
Qualifications

The Senior Wetland Scientist selected should have the following:

  • Master's or PhD in wetland science, ecology, geography, environmental or earth science, hydrology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Roughly 5+ years of relevant experience, or a PhD plus a few years of relevant work.
  • Demonstrated experience mapping wetlands, land cover, or comparable features at large spatial scale.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native geospatial tooling, formats, and workflows.
  • Experience implementing or adapting geospatial or ecological models (wetland potential, habitat, boundary and extent, or comparable).
  • Proficiency in Python and/or R for geospatial analysis, with sound coding and reproducibility practices.

The Ideal Senior Wetland Scientist will have the following:

  • Experience with wetland potential or probability modeling and with wetland delineation, boundary, and extent methods.
  • Experience applying machine learning to land-cover or wetland classification.
  • Familiarity with national wetland, hydrography, soils, and elevation datasets, and with remote-sensing inputs.
  • Experience with distributed or parallel processing for large-area geospatial work (e.g., cloud batch, Dask, or Google Earth Engine).
  • A record of scientific publication or successful proposal work.
  • Colorado Front Range presence for periodic in-person collaboration.
