Job Description ***FOR CURRENT STATE EMPLOYEES, ESTABLISHED SALARY RULES APPLY*** To serve as a professional staff employee of the Indiana State Police (ISP) whose primary responsibility is to support the Forensic Services Division's (FSD) responsibilities in routine forensic biology analysis with associated court presentation. Job Duties Perform administrative and support functions as necessary to maintain analytical service. Acquire and maintain analytical proficiency in forensic biology analysis.
Maintain effective communication with the scientific and criminal justice communities and Department personnel. Satisfactory completion in an ISP recognized forensic biology analysis training/testing program. Upon completion of relevant training, conduct forensic analysis on routine biological samples of limited complexity and difficulty utilizing approved Unit Test Methods.
Work under the direction of a higher-level forensic scientist or supervisor including review of records. Communicate analytical procedures, methodology, policies, and conclusions to various elements in the criminal justice system including court testimony as an expert witness. Participate in a proficiency testing program.
Assist in preventative maintenance of laboratory instruments and safety equipment. Participate in continuing education and training programs in the analysis of biological samples. Comply with Standard Operating Procedures, Rules, Regulations, and FSD policies.
Perform other duties as required. Job Qualifications Baccalaureate degree or higher in biology, chemistry, and/or forensic science which shall include a minimum of 9 credit hours of coursework in biology - or chemistry - related areas that provide an understanding of the foundation of DNA analysis. This coursework covering statistics or population genetics is required.
Knowledge of theory and practical operation of various scientific instrumentation and analytical techniques. Ability to perform complex scientific procedures in an unbiased manner following the Unit Test Methods. Ability to comprehend, demonstrate, and explain knowledge of the theory and practical operation of various scientific instruments and analytical techniques.
Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment. Ability to adhere to established laboratory safety practices. Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to testify as an expert witness in an objective, unbiased, and professional manner. Must be able to differentiate colors as evidenced by medical certification. Must possess a valid driver's license.
Ability to travel by aircraft and other vehicles. Ability to attend training at alternate locations for extended periods of time. Must be able to successfully pass a background investigation and must be willing to submit to and pass a pre-employment psychological evaluation.
