Nature & Purpose of Position
Performs complex administrative and supervisory program work to support the increasing demands of the Forensic Science teaching, research, and compliance operations to sustain continued program growth and support the Forensic Science department.
Primary Responsibilities
Oversees the laboratory operations for the Forensic Science department. Ensures compliance with safety regulations, chemical hygiene plans, and university policies. Manages inventory of laboratory equipment, chemicals, and supplies. Maintains laboratory instruments and performs routine maintenance on analytical equipment. Maintains accurate laboratory records, including equipment logs and chemical inventories. Coordinates ordering of laboratory supplies and works with vendors to maintain adequate stock levels. Oversees proper storage, labeling, and disposal of chemical and biological waste. Trains graduate students on laboratory procedures, equipment operation, and safety practices. Develops training manuals, procedures, policies, and relevant online teaching materials. Troubleshoots laboratory equipment issues and coordinates repairs or vendor services as needed. Maintains cleanliness and organization of laboratory spaces, including benches, storage areas, and equipment rooms. Assists with laboratory inspections, accreditation requirements, quality assurance documentation, and internships. Provides technical support for departmental research, teaching, and collaborative projects. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Other Specifications
Contact with vendors who provide supplies, materials, and services for lab activities. Must be familiar with common laboratory equipment. Must be familiar with the instruction and research curriculum. Must be able to follow oral and written instruction. Position requires working a modified schedule to accommodate classes and special projects. Position requires frequent contact with students, staff and faculty. Occasional teaching responsibilities in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques may be required. Experience with GC-MS instrumentation is preferred, with additional proficiency in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) platforms, including triple quadrupole (QQQ) and quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF) mass spectrometry systems, considered an asset. Position requires communication and interpersonal skills. Position includes opportunities for training and professional development. Attention and care is required in the performance of duties to prevent injury to self or others.
