What is a forensic engineer?
A forensic engineer specializes in accident and failure analysis of structures or product that have failed to perform correctly and to discover whether there is a design flaw. As a forensic engineer, your responsibilities include examining the product or structure that did not perform as intended, collecting and analyzing the evidence and making recommendations for future preventative measures. Your job is to oversee the investigation of the design, materials, and all other contributing factors in the failure, to prevent future incidents.
What is the difference between Forensic Engineer vs Structural Engineer?
| Aspect | Forensic Engineer | Structural Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Engineering degree, Professional Engineer (PE) license, specialized training in accident or failure analysis | Engineering degree, PE license, focus on structural design and analysis |
| Work Environment | Investigations, courtrooms, consulting firms, insurance companies | Construction sites, design offices, consulting firms |
| Industry Usage | Legal cases, failure analysis, accident investigations | Building design, construction, structural assessments |
While both roles require engineering credentials and a PE license, forensic engineers focus on investigating failures and providing expert testimony in legal cases, often working in investigative and courtroom settings. Structural engineers primarily design and analyze structures, working on construction projects and structural assessments. The two roles overlap in engineering expertise but differ in their primary functions and work environments.

Are you a passionate engineer eager to make a meaningful impact on a bigger scale? Aviva is thrilled to announce a new innovative role that offers an unparalleled opportunity to shape the future of engineering services for our customers and claims team. This is an exciting chance to build key strategies and initiatives as part of a growing team.

In this role, you will provide Aviva with inhouse forensic engineering consulting services with a specialized focus on electrical fire origin and cause investigations. This includes conducting detailed field examinations, performing technical analyses of electrical systems and components, and thoroughly documenting all physical and electrical evidence. Your work culminates in comprehensive, timely reports to the Claims Professional outlining your expert opinions, analyses, assessments and recommendations specific to electrical fire losses. In addition, you will support the development of training for our Claims Professionals on electrical fire risks and investigation techniques, while also offering insight to our Underwriters and Aviva Risk Management Solutions (ARMS) to help strengthen risk evaluation and prevention strategies in this specialized area.
Don't miss out on this outstanding opportunity! Come, join our team !
What you'll do
In this in-house consulting role, your expertise and experience are required to:
Support our claims professionals, independent adjusters and customers by investigating losses to determine the origin and cause of fires and explosions as well as product, equipment and material failures. You will investigate losses through on-site inspection and forensic evaluation to determine origin and cause, where required to support claims handling, coverage determination and recovery efforts against third parties.
Conduct field investigations of structure fires and explosions, including vehicle fires or equipment failures, documenting your work and collecting all necessary evidence including witness interviews, fire service interviews, media reports, security videos, product recalls etc.
Analyze and identify the root cause of losses applying established fire investigation methodology and the scientific method detailing the steps and assumptions in your investigation that led you to your conclusion.
You will use your expertise to make decisions on (1) the most plausible reason for a failure based on data; (2) whether the design, installation or maintenance met industry standards or, if appropriate, building codes; (3) whether the loss was due to design error, manufacturing defect, improper maintenance or external factors.
Interact with customers to explain the investigation process, gather relevant information, coordinate site access, and communicate findings clearly and professionally without making coverage decisions.
Provide engineering opinions and technical assistance to Claims Professionals, leadership and other key stakeholders to support decision-making. This includes preparing reports and letters outlining your opinions in a clear, precise manner adapting to a non-technical audience.
Guide the technical direction of investigations, including determining when external specialty expertise is required or reviewing external forensic opinions, including conducting peer reviews of external investigations and opinions.

Proven ability to communicate complex technical conclusions clearly to non-technical stakeholders through verbal explanation and written technical reports.
Experience reviewing and assessing external forensic or specialty expert opinions for technical accuracy.
Experience applying relevant legislation and related documents such as the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, Fire Code, Health and Safety Act, and Building Code.
