Food Industry information

What is the food industry?

The food industry encompasses all businesses and activities involved in the production, processing, packaging, distribution, and sale of food. This includes agriculture, food manufacturing, restaurants, grocery stores, and food service providers. The industry plays a vital role in ensuring the food supply chain operates smoothly from farm to table, meeting safety and quality standards. Careers in the food industry can range from food scientists and chefs to marketing professionals and supply chain managers.

How to get a food industry job?

The qualifications you need to work in the food industry vary significantly by position. To be a chef, you may need to attend culinary or hospitality school, although many people who work in kitchens learn practical skills on the job and work their way up through the staff. Working in food production may require a bachelor’s degree in food science or a closely related degree. Serving and front-of-house managerial positions often require a high school diploma or a GED certificate, although many high school students get summer jobs as servers or bussers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the food industry?

To thrive in the food industry, you need a solid understanding of food safety, culinary techniques, and industry regulations, often supported by relevant training or certifications. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, point-of-sale systems, and food handling certifications (like ServSafe) is commonly required. Strong teamwork, communication, and adaptability help individuals excel in dynamic and customer-focused environments. These skills ensure food quality, operational efficiency, and customer satisfaction in a highly competitive industry.

What are some common challenges faced when working in the food industry, and how can I prepare for them?

Working in the food industry often involves fast-paced environments, strict health and safety regulations, and peak periods of high customer demand. Adapting quickly to changing priorities, maintaining excellent hygiene standards, and staying calm under pressure are essential skills. Being proactive in learning food safety protocols and developing strong communication with your team can help you succeed and grow within the industry.

Overview

About the job

We're looking for an Industry Principal, Food & Beverage at our Alpharetta, GA office. This is a full-time onsite role. You'll own the success of our Food & Beverage segment and drive cross-functional alignment across Product, Sales, Marketing, Operations, and Customer Success.

You'll sit within the Global Marketing organization as the Food & Beverage segment's single point of accountability for market success. Your authority comes from expertise and credibility, not a reporting structure. You'll influence without formal power and own segment financial outcomes including pipeline, new logo acquisition, up sells/cross sells, and retention.

Key Responsibilities

You'll ensure go-to-market teams are well educated and have the tools to win. You'll monitor lead follow-up and act as the segment expert in high-stakes engagements. You'll work closely with Campaign Managers to oversee demand generation programs and drive optimization. You'll define go-to-market strategy and Product Marketing, and understand the competitive landscape including supply traceability, regulatory compliance, and production planning. You'll partner with Product Management on roadmaps and messaging, collaborate with Operations and Customer Success on retention, and advocate for segment needs in planning cycles.

About you

You are a natural owner who doesn't wait to be assigned responsibility. You're organized and clear-headed in complexity, comfortable managing multiple workstreams, and your default is to solve challenges. You have B2B experience in product marketing, sales, strategy, food operations, or food manufacturing-ideally in SaaS or enterprise software. You communicate clearly and influence through expertise and relationships without formal authority.

To be ahead of the pack, you might have:

  • Direct experience in food & beverage operations, manufacturing, or food production
  • Track record owning a business segment or vertical end-to-end
  • Experience representing food & beverage industry solutions in forums or on stage
  • Proven ability to drive cross-functional alignment without formal authority

Preferred Skills

  • Food & beverage operations: supply traceability, compliance, production
  • GTM tools and CRM platforms in B2B SaaS
  • Demand planning and quality management experience
