What is a food controller?

Food Controllers are professionals responsible for managing and overseeing food inventory, quality control, and cost management within food production or hospitality environments. They ensure that food supplies are properly stored, tracked, and utilized to minimize waste and maximize efficiency. Food Controllers often work closely with chefs, suppliers, and management to maintain safety standards and meet budgetary requirements. Their role is essential in keeping operations running smoothly and ensuring food quality and safety for customers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a food controller?

To thrive as a Food Controller, you need strong knowledge of inventory management, food safety regulations, and cost control, often supported by experience in hospitality or a related qualification. Familiarity with inventory software, point-of-sale (POS) systems, and food safety certifications like HACCP is typically required. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure precise stock management, compliance with safety standards, and optimal food cost efficiency in hospitality environments.

What are some common challenges food controllers face in maintaining inventory accuracy within a busy hospitality environment?

Food Controllers often encounter challenges such as fluctuating guest volumes, last-minute menu changes, and coordinating with multiple departments, all of which can impact inventory accuracy. Staying proactive with regular stock counts, clear communication with kitchen and purchasing teams, and utilizing inventory management software help mitigate discrepancies. Additionally, Food Controllers must be vigilant about minimizing food waste and spoilage to keep costs in check while ensuring food safety and quality standards are met.

Job description

We're recruiting for a Corporate Controller role with a growing, privately-held company in Seattle spanning multiple distinct business lines under one ownership group. You'd oversee a team of divisional controllers, partner directly with senior leadership, and play a key role as the company works through a period of operational and systems maturation — this is a business-partner-first seat, working alongside a non-traditional finance executive who relies on you to translate complex accounting into clear, actionable insight.

Base is $180,000-$220,000+ (DOE) plus a 10-20% annual bonus, with full benefits including medical/dental/vision, 401(k) match, and generous PTO. If your background includes progressive accounting leadership in a multi-entity or multi-division business, apply now!

Title: Corporate Controller
Location: Seattle, WA — fully onsite, 5 days/week (relocation supported)
Compensation: $180,000-$220,000+ base (DOE) + 10-20% annual bonus + full benefits (medical/dental/vision, 401(k) match, generous PTO)

Must-Haves:

  • 7-10+ years progressive accounting/financial leadership experience, including team management
  • Multi-entity or multi-division experience with separate books and closes
  • Food manufacturing, CPG, beverage, or broader manufacturing/distribution background
  • Demonstrated controllership-level ownership (division or corporate)
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting

Strong Pluses:

  • Public accounting background (Big 4 or top national firm)
