As an FME, your daily responsibilities often include inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing building systems such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire safety equipment. You'll also conduct preventive maintenance to ensure all systems run efficiently, respond to urgent repair requests, and maintain accurate records of work performed. Close collaboration with facility management, contractors, and other engineering staff is a key part of the job to coordinate larger repairs or improvements. This hands-on role requires prioritizing tasks efficiently and being prepared to handle unexpected technical challenges as they arise.
To thrive as an FME (Facilities Maintenance Engineer), you need a solid understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, typically supported by relevant technical certifications or a diploma in engineering or building services. Familiarity with building management systems (BMS), Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), and industry safety standards is highly beneficial. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are key soft skills that ensure timely and safe resolution of maintenance issues. These skills are crucial to maintaining facility operations, equipment longevity, and a safe environment for occupants.
An FME job typically involves working with Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) software to manage, transform, and integrate spatial and non-spatial data. Professionals in this role often work in GIS, data engineering, or IT, helping organizations streamline data workflows and automate processes. Responsibilities may include creating data transformation scripts, optimizing data formats, and ensuring seamless data migration between different systems. This role is common in industries such as urban planning, utilities, transportation, and environmental management. Strong knowledge of FME Workbench, databases, and scripting languages like Python can be beneficial.

CONTRACT PERIOD April 2026 - May 2027
PAY RATE $15 USD per hour. This is an hourly, paid position for the academic year (Fall and Spring semesters). On average, FME Mentors will work 6-12 hours per week, which includes attending FME class twice per week.
THE OPPORTUNITY
FME Mentors playan important rolein guiding first-year students through the Foundations of Management and Entrepreneurship Experience.They serve as the liaison for FME ventures between Undergraduate Experiential Learning and the FME processes. Mentors collaborate with FME Faculty to provideadditionalclassroom support throughout the first and second semesters to support the FME experience. Mentors serve as a student resource from the start of ventureideation upuntil the close of business.
Two FME Mentors will be assigned to each FME section. It is expected that FME mentors will develop a productive working relationship with each other, their faculty members, and Undergraduate Experiential Learning. Mentors willbea visible and positive influence on all the students in their sections.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Remain in good standing with the College through theselection, training, and contract periods
Exemplify professionalism in the classroom and role model student behavior in both conduct and communication
Havetimelycommunication with Undergraduate Experiential Learning and FME Faculty
Coach ventures including efforts to get uninvolved students more engaged and offer guidance for conflict resolution
Promote Peer Tutoring group study time with students prior to exams
Assistventures with various business presentation preparations
Meet with FME faculty on a weekly/biweekly basis and attend all FME Mentor team meetings
Collaborate with Auditing & Accounting Mentors as needed to ensure students are comfortable with their deliverables
Keep professional intrapersonal relationships and not be romantically involved with any students in assigned section
Maintain confidentiality with any information presented
Assume additional responsibilities as required
Assist all FME Mentor monthly meetings
YOUR TEAM WILL INCLUDE
For training, support, and guidance with completing thepositionresponsibilities, FME Mentors report to Undergraduate Experiential Learning & Academic Excellence. Mentors alsoestablishcollaborative relationships with the FME Faculty in their assigned section.
WHAT EDUCATION AND SKILLS YOU WILL NEED
Must have cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher at time of applying and throughout employment
Successful completion of FME course
Familiarity with FME course tools including but not limited to: Canvas, Qualtrics, Undergraduate Experiential Learning resources and processes
Ability toprovideappropriate guidance to their peers through active listening and open-ended questioning
Ability to direct students to different campus services as needed (Math, Writing and Speech Resource Centers, Peer Tutoring, Health Services, CAPS, etc.)
Ability to create an environment where direct reports have the freedom and security to take initiative; deal with complexities with resilience, resourcefulness, and optimism; and appreciate open mindedness, creativity, and agility in thought and tactics.

HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK
The FME Mentor role is an in-person position, with mentors expected to attend FME Class sessions, monthly meetings with the Undergraduate Experiential Learning team, and additional classroom support throughout the first and second semesters to all students in their section.
