What is a Fly In Fly Out Mining job?

A Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) mining job is a work arrangement where employees travel to remote mine sites for a set period, usually working long shifts, before flying back home for their scheduled time off. These jobs are common in the mining industry, where operations are located far from major cities. Companies typically provide flights, accommodation, and meals while workers are on-site. FIFO roles can be demanding due to long hours and time away from family, but they often offer competitive salaries and benefits.

What should I expect from the work schedule and accommodation in a Fly In Fly Out Mining position?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining jobs typically follow rostered schedules such as two weeks on-site followed by one week off, which means you will spend extended periods away from home. During your shift, accommodation is usually provided in purpose-built camps with amenities like meals, laundry facilities, and recreational spaces. While the hours can be long and physically demanding, many find the structured roster allows for substantial time off between rotations. It's important to be prepared for communal living and the remote nature of mining sites, but these arrangements are designed to support workers’ comfort and well-being. The FIFO model also offers unique networking opportunities with industry professionals from across the country.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Fly In Fly Out Mining position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Mining role, you need a solid understanding of mining operations, safety protocols, and relevant trade or technical qualifications such as a mining engineering degree or certification in heavy machinery operation. Familiarity with mining equipment, safety management systems, and adherence to industry regulations is crucial. Strong teamwork, resilience, and adaptability to remote environments are essential soft skills in this field. These competencies enable safe, efficient operations and help employees manage the unique challenges of extended time away from home.

Job description

The role - what you'll do
Barr is seeking a highly experienced senior environmental consultant with a strong mining focus to work with clients to identify, scope, and manage integrated environmental permitting and engineering projects across the full life cycle, from greenfield development through closure. This role involves coordinating multidisciplinary teams across multiple offices to produce high-quality technical documents for regulatory review.
The position is client-facing and relationship-driven, requiring frequent interaction with federal, state, and local regulators; non-governmental organizations; resource managers; industry representatives; technical experts; and interested stakeholders. A successful candidate is intrinsically motivated, consultative in style, flexible, and committed to delivering successful projects that strengthen long-term client relationships and support future business opportunities.
Your impact - key responsibilities
  • Permitting and compliance: assisting clients with permitting, environmental regulatory compliance, and related technical assignments.
  • Client service: collaborating with clients to identify and address environmental issues, including regulatory applicability determinations, preparing compliance plans and reports, developing permitting applications, and performing technical and economic feasibility studies.
  • Client management: sustain and grow relationships with existing mining clients through successful project execution and consultative engagement.
  • Team leadership: leading and managing highly collaborative project teams and developing internal team members.
  • Agency engagement: participating in meetings and negotiations with clients and regulatory agency personnel.
  • Business development: engaging in business development activities, including the development of proposals, scopes of work, and appropriate budgets.

About the opportunity
  • Hybrid: a hybrid arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office; a remote arrangement refers to working primarily from a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Reno, Nevada, office or Salt Lake City, Utah, office.
  • Travel expectation: up to 25% of the time, may vary depending on client needs.
  • Work environment: projects may require time on site at industrial and mining facilities. Some locations include rough terrain, limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of construction or industrial sites. Work may involve waste disposal sites or locations requiring hazardous materials cleanup. As needed, safety training will be provided, and an OSHA-mandated physical exam (HAZWOPER) or MSHA training may be required. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies
  • Education: bachelor's degree in mining, civil, or environmental engineering, geology, or a related discipline.
  • Experience:
    • 15 or more years of experience directly related to the mining industry, including environmental review, permitting, and reclamation.
    • Recent environmental consulting experience.
  • Relevant skills:
    • Demonstrated ability to lead, organize, and direct multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven consulting environment.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and consultatively with clients, regulators, and project teams.
    • Proven skills in negotiation, problem-solving, project organization, and producing high-quality deliverables.
    • Track record of meeting deadlines, fulfilling commitments, and mentoring staff.
  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required):
  • Familiarity with regulatory agencies and officials in western U.S. jurisdictions such as New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona.
  • Established relationships with mining clients and strong industry knowledge.
  • Participation in mining-related trade organizations such as NMA, SME, and AEMA.

Compensation:
Anticipated salary range of $120,000 to $170,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
