Fly In Fly Out Housekeeping information

What is a fly in fly out housekeeping job?

Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) Housekeeping jobs involve traveling to remote work sites, such as mines or oil and gas camps, to provide cleaning and maintenance services for accommodation and communal areas. Workers usually follow a roster, spending a set number of days working on site before flying home for a break. These roles require adaptability, attention to detail, and the ability to live and work away from home for extended periods. FIFO housekeeping is common in industries that operate in remote locations where local labor is scarce.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fly in fly out housekeeper?

To thrive as a Fly In Fly Out Housekeeper, you need experience in cleaning and maintaining facilities, attention to detail, and often a valid police clearance or similar background check. Familiarity with cleaning chemicals, industrial cleaning equipment, and safety systems such as MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheets) is typically required. Strong time management, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills due to the remote work environment and shift-based schedules. These competencies are crucial for maintaining high cleanliness standards, ensuring safety, and contributing to the overall well-being of remote workers in challenging locations.

What challenges can I expect when working as a fly in fly out housekeeper, and how can I prepare for them?

Working as a FIFO Housekeeper often involves adapting to remote environments, long shifts, and extended periods away from home. The role requires strong time management, resilience, and the ability to maintain a high standard of cleanliness despite repetitive tasks. Building good relationships with team members can make the rostered work schedule more manageable, and maintaining a healthy routine during off-hours can help with the transition between work and home life. Preparation involves both practical readiness—such as packing essentials for remote stays—and mental resilience for adapting to a unique work-life balance.
