What is a flooring manager?

Flooring Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the installation, maintenance, and sales of flooring products in retail stores, construction companies, or specialty flooring businesses. They manage teams of installers or sales staff, ensure projects are completed on time and within budget, and maintain high standards of customer service. Flooring Managers also coordinate with suppliers, handle inventory, and may assist customers in selecting the right flooring materials for their needs.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a flooring manager?

To thrive as a Flooring Manager, you need expertise in flooring installation techniques, project management, and strong knowledge of materials, usually backed by experience in the flooring or construction industry. Familiarity with estimating software, inventory management systems, and safety certifications like OSHA are commonly required. Outstanding leadership, customer service, and problem-solving skills help manage teams and exceed client expectations. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring project efficiency, safety, customer satisfaction, and business growth.

What are common challenges a flooring manager faces when overseeing multiple projects simultaneously?

A Flooring Manager often juggles several projects at once, which can present challenges such as coordinating schedules, managing material deliveries, and ensuring consistent quality across sites. Effective communication with installation teams, suppliers, and clients is crucial to avoid delays and misunderstandings. Developing strong organizational skills and using project management tools can help streamline operations and address issues proactively, ensuring all projects stay on track and within budget.

How do you become a flooring manager?

To become a flooring manager, candidates typically need several years of experience in flooring installation or sales, along with strong leadership and project management skills. Earning relevant certifications, such as those from industry associations, can enhance prospects, and familiarity with tools like flooring estimation software is beneficial.

Seeking Veterinary Floor Manager in Colorado Springs, CO

North Springs Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Center, a privately owned 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital in beautiful Colorado Springs, CO, is seeking a full-time floor manager to join our growing team.

Job Title: Floor Manager (Veterinary Technician Training & Development)

Reports To: Practice Manager and ER Director

Position Overview:

We are seeking a collaborative, driven, and people-focused Floor Manager to help lead the training, development, and performance of our veterinary support staff team. This leadership role is instrumental in creating a structured, supportive, and high-performing clinical environment.

Working closely with the Practice Manager, ER Director, Specialty Doctors, fellow Floor Manager, and CEO, this individual will help design and implement a comprehensive Support Staff Development Programโ€”including skill assessments, structured training pathways, and objective performance review systems. In partnership with hospital leaders across departments, this role also plays a key part in fostering a positive, respectful, and cohesive workplace culture.

Once established, the primary day-to-day focus of this role will be hands-on training, coaching, and leading technicians and support staff on the floor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with leadership (Practice Manager, ER Director, CEO, Specialty Doctors, and co-Floor Manager) to develop and implement:
    • Initial support staff skill assessments (to include self assessment)
    • A comprehensive training program with defined timelines and skill progression
    • Clear advancement pathways for support staff growth and development
    • Objective, consistent criteria for internal performance evaluations (to include self assessment as well as doctor/mentor/peer assessment)
  • Continuously evaluate and refine training systems to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and alignment with hospital goals

Training & Implementation

  • Lead the day-to-day execution of the Support Staff Development Program
  • Provide handsโ€‘on instruction, mentorship, and realโ€‘time coaching on the floor
  • Ensure all team members are progressing through training milestones appropriately
  • Conduct and document regular skill assessments and performance evaluations with Practice Manager
  • Identify skill gaps and proactively create individualized development plans
  • Coordinate with the specialty doctors training and advancement opportunities for the specialty support staff

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead by example with professionalism, accountability, and a strong work ethic
  • Foster a positive, supportive, and teamโ€‘oriented culture
  • Build strong, respectful relationships with technicians and support staff
  • Provide clear, constructive, and timely feedback to team members
  • Support team morale, engagement, and retention through consistent presence and communication
  • Serve as a floor lead to set and manage the floor, optimize floor efficiency, direct support staff to best support doctors and create effective floor flow
  • Work in tandem with the CSR Manager, Inventory Manager, Lab Manager, and Community & Culture Manager to create and maintain a positive, healthy work environment
  • Promote alignment and collaboration across all departments to support a cohesive hospital culture
  • Lead by example in professionalism, respect, and accountability in all interactions
  • Proactively address and help quell gossip or unproductive behaviors, reinforcing a culture of trust and transparency
  • Encourage and model healthy, respectful, and solutionโ€‘oriented communication among staff
  • Support and facilitate effective problemโ€‘solving and conflict management, stepping in when needed to guide productive and respectful outcomes
  • Partner with leadership to identify cultural challenges and implement solutions that strengthen team dynamics and overall engagement
  • Actively participate and engage in a Leadership Development Cohort (a middleโ€‘management mentorship program led by the Practice Managerโ€”to include elements of leadership knowledge and skills, hospital planning, reading requirements, training exercises and continuing education)
  • Partner closely with hospital leadership to ensure alignment across departments
  • Maintain open, proactive communication regarding team progress, challenges, and opportunities
  • Work collaboratively with the coโ€‘Floor Manager to ensure consistency in training and expectations
  • Serve as a bridge between leadership and clinical staff

Additional Management Duties

  • Participate in the interview process of hiring new staff members
  • Participate in all support staff disciplinary discussions
  • Create and maintain support staff schedule
  • Manage onโ€‘call phone (in rotation)

Scheduling Requirements

  • Floor Manager 1: Sundayโ€‘Wednesday (10 hour shifts)
  • Floor Manager 2: Wednesdayโ€‘Saturday (10 hour shifts)
  • Timing of shifts is variable depending on the training needs and timing of staff
  • Regular Wednesdays that overlap with management meetings provide a schedule conducive of collaboration with executive team and are essential
  • There may be additional meetings outside of these times for Leadership Development Cohort
  • Schedule relief for open shifts or fill in for open shifts as needed

Qualifications:

  • Strong clinical experience as a veterinary technician (ER and/or specialty experience required)
  • Preferred leadership or mentorship experience in a clinical setting
  • Passion for teaching, coaching, and developing others
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly organized with the ability to create structure and follow through on execution
  • Positive, teamโ€‘oriented mindset with a collaborative approach to leadership
  • Ability to give and receive feedback with professionalism and clarity

Key Attributes for Success:

  • Collaborative and solutionsโ€‘oriented
  • Leads with integrity and consistency
  • Approachable and relationshipโ€‘driven
  • Skilled in communication, conflict resolution, and team dynamics
  • Adaptable in a fastโ€‘paced environment
  • Committed to continuous improvementโ€”for both self and team

Summary:

This is a handsโ€‘on leadership role designed for someone who is passionate about developing people, elevating clinical excellence, and cultivating a strong, positive team culture. While this position plays a key role in building training systems, its greatest impact will come from daily presence on the floorโ€”training, coaching, supporting veterinary technicians, and helping create an environment where people feel respected, supported, and motivated to do their best work.
