About the Unit

6 South is a 22-bed acuity adaptable unit at Butterworth Hospital that is capable of managing both non ICU and ICU status patients admitted with advanced cardiopulmonary care needs. 6 South specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, pre or post heart or lung transplant, Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, and respiratory failure necessitating Bipap, Hi-Flo Nasal Cannula.

It is the flagship hospital for Corewell Health Grand Rapids Hospitals.

Scope of work

Acts as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider. Performs basic skills per department guidelines and communicates observations to members of the health care team. Collects and reports physiological, psychological, sociocultural and spiritual needs of patients and families in coordination with and as delineated by the RN or Provider. Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization and acting as a safety attendant for patients. Ensures that required documentation is performed in an accurate and timely manner.

Orientation - 3 days per week for multiple weeks: August, September and October

Orientation for the first and third week of employment as Nurse Tech requires Monday, Tues, Wed 8am-4:30pm orientation classes, and in addition to 2 more class dates on week 3 and 4. In addition to the orientation class time required there will be a need to complete 6-8 weeks of clinical orientation shifts 7am-7:30pm alongside a preceptor within the unit. Regular night shifts begin after orientation weeks are completed.

Qualifications

  • Required High School Diploma or equivalent
  • AHA or ARC Basic Life Support (BLS) Required within 90 days
  • 1 year of patient care experience is preferred
