What is a flight nurse?

In an emergency or rescue operation that requires immediate care, a flight nurse is a registered nurse that assists injured patients during emergency aircraft transport. Flight nurses are essential to medical staff in fire departments, the military, hospitals, and state and federal emergency response teams. This job requires skills and qualifications beyond common nursing positions to treat pediatric patients and adults in different scenarios.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flight nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Flight Nurse, you need advanced clinical skills in emergency and critical care, along with a nursing degree, RN licensure, and certifications such as CCRN, CEN, or CFRN. Familiarity with aeromedical equipment, transport protocols, and electronic patient documentation systems is typically required. Strong decision-making, teamwork, and communication skills are crucial for providing care in high-pressure, unpredictable environments. These competencies ensure patient safety and effective treatment during air transport, where resources are limited and conditions can change rapidly.

How do flight nurses typically collaborate with other members of the air medical team during patient transports?

Flight nurses work closely with flight paramedics, pilots, and sometimes physicians to ensure safe and effective patient care during air transports. They communicate constantly with the pilot to assess flight conditions and with paramedics to coordinate advanced medical interventions. Collaboration is key, as each team member relies on the expertise of the others to make quick decisions under pressure, stabilize patients, and maintain safety protocols. This teamwork creates a dynamic and supportive environment where clear communication and trust are essential.

Both Flight Nurses and Emergency Room Nurses require RN licensure and similar certifications like ACLS, PALS, and TNCC. Flight Nurses work primarily in air ambulance settings, providing critical care during transport, often in remote or urgent situations. Emergency Room Nurses work in hospital ERs, managing acute patient care in a fast-paced environment. While their settings differ, both roles demand quick decision-making, advanced skills, and a focus on emergency care.

Can you work for an airline as a flight nurse?

Flight nurses can work for airlines or medical transport companies that operate aircraft, providing critical care during air ambulance or medical evacuation flights. They typically need specialized training, certifications such as ACLS and PALS, and experience in emergency or critical care nursing. Working in this role involves coordinating with flight crews and adapting to the unique environment of air medical transport.
