Job description

The Sports & Fitness Coordinator is responsible for the planning, implementation, and facilitation of all sports programming and sports leagues at their assigned Branch. Under the direction of the Branch Director and the guidance of the Sports League Director, the Sports & Fitness Coordinator provides a broad range of high-quality, comprehensive, safe, and fun sports experiences for Club members. The primary focus of this position is to utilize the organization’s mission, vision, and principles to set members up for success, and provide leadership and guidance to members as it relates to participation in sports programming and sports competition. Responsibilities include but are not limited to sports program and sports league development, delivery, and assessment, program area safety and cleanliness, budgetary management, building and maintaining community relationships, volunteer supervision, and providing guidance to part-time staff as it pertains to program/league quality and safety.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Program Development & Implementation:

  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates programs, services, and activities for the youth development program and sports leagues to ensure they are organized and well planned, meet stated objectives, align with member needs and interests, and in synch with BGCS’s Healthy Game Changers initiative. 
  • Oversees proper recordkeeping and reporting including registration, activities, events, breakdowns of participation figures, notable achievements, and incidents.
  • Under the guidance of the Sports Leagues Director, oversees the league process and schedule to ensure that planning and coordination is done in advance of the season. 
  • Ensures that all proper protocols are followed in relation to volunteers.
  • Develops strategies to increase visibility and promote Club league programs, services, and activities to the community.
  • Ensures day-to-day tasks and responsibilities are managed for each sports program.
  • Provides support on game days and practices in the absence of required volunteers or staff. 
  • Supports the Sports Leagues Director in the training of staff and volunteers to enhance coaching skills and reinforce behavior expectations for players and spectators. 
  • Establishes annual participation goals for each sport.
  • Responsible for growth and oversight of the teams at their assigned Branch.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates coaches, officials, scorekeepers, and other sports staff/volunteers.   
  • Creates a dynamic, positive work environment for part-time staff. Maintains close daily contact with indirect reports. Provides coaching, training opportunities, redirection, and encouragement; helps develop skill set necessary for internal promotion. 
  • Develops and maintains excellent relationships and communication with parents/guardians, community leaders, professional athletic organizations, and higher education athletic personnel.
  • Works collaboratively with athletic personnel and principals in local schools.

Health & Safety:

  • Ensures program areas remain safe, clean, and organized.
  • Implements and ensures adherence to Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale’s policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates sound judgement and decision-making. Acts quickly in emergency situations.
  • Maintains Club equipment and property to ensure they stay in good working order.
  • Uses positive guidance and discipline techniques to redirect member behavior issues.
  • Utilizes active supervision techniques when working with Club members.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Required:

  • Minimum 2 years’ work experience in youth development, recreation, or other related fields.
  • Previous sports league experience.
  • Strong knowledge and skills related to a physical education curriculum.
  • Strong knowledge of rules of games, and individual and team sports.
  • Organized, flexible, and precise with sports related information.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to Club’s changing needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cooperative working skills.
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Suite and be comfortable adapting to new technology.
  • Ability to earn and maintain CPR and First Aide certifications.
  • Maintains a valid driver’s license and meets eligibility requirements to drive Club vehicles.
  • Flawless ethics and integrity.
  • Safety oriented mindset.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to move quickly to keep up with youth and teens.
  • Must maintain energy and be attentive for 8 hours or more a day.
  • Must be able to work in an office environment with frequent hours at a computer.
  • Must be able to frequently stand, walk, run, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, pull, push, twist trunk or neck, climb and grasp or squeeze with right and left hand in completing required tasks.
  • Must be able to regularly deal with normal levels of stress.
  • Must be able to regularly lift and move up to 35 pounds and should do so in a safe and sound manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work environment is varied, divided between typical office setting and gym environment.
  • Must be able to complete work satisfactorily despite significant, frequent distractions throughout the workday.
  • Workload and working hours may fluctuate throughout the year. During sports season work schedule  maybe 12pm-8pm. Along with some Saturdays depending on the sport season.
  • Required to provide programming directly for youth and/or teen members.
  • Required to drive Club vehicles, including a 15-passenger minibus.
  • Works both indoors and outdoors. Exposed to variable weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat.
