Flexible Java Developer Startup information

What is a flexible Java developer at a startup?

A Flexible Java Developer at a startup is a software engineer proficient in Java who can adapt to various roles and tasks within a fast-paced, evolving startup environment. This role often involves working on multiple aspects of the software development lifecycle, from designing and coding to testing and deploying applications. Flexibility is key, as startups may require team members to tackle different technical challenges, learn new technologies quickly, and contribute to both backend and sometimes frontend development. The position typically values problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently, and strong communication to collaborate with a small team. Startups offer opportunities for rapid growth and hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible Java developer in a startup?

To thrive as a Flexible Java Developer in a Startup, you need strong Java programming skills, knowledge of software development principles, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks like Spring Boot, version control systems (e.g., Git), and experience with cloud platforms or CI/CD tools are typically required. Adaptability, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for navigating the fast-changing, collaborative startup environment. These skills and qualities are vital for rapidly delivering robust solutions and contributing to a dynamic, growth-oriented team.

How does working as a flexible Java developer at a startup differ from a similar role in a larger company?

As a Flexible Java Developer in a startup environment, you'll likely take on a broader range of responsibilities, such as contributing to both backend and frontend tasks, participating in product planning, and even assisting with deployment and troubleshooting. Startups often require adaptability and a willingness to learn new technologies quickly as project needs evolve. Collaboration tends to be close-knit, with regular interaction between developers, designers, and product managers, giving you greater influence over product direction. This dynamic setting provides ample opportunities for rapid skill development and career growth, though it may also present challenges such as ambiguity in processes and shifting priorities.

Environmental Process Engineer
Department: Civil/Environmental

Description
Creativity. Innovation. A desire to effect positive change. That's what it takes to work at Fuss & O'Neill - because that's what we do for the communities in which we work: we create, innovate, and design long-lasting improvements that improve quality of life. Quality of life is also important on the job, so we've prioritized work-life balance by offering flexible/remote work opportunities, part-time benefits, and generous PTO. We believe that each day is an opportunity to support one another, to support our clients, and to support our communities. If you feel the same, then you've found your future.
Fuss & O'Neill is looking for an Environmental Process Engineer to join our growing Environmental Compliance team. This role offers the opportunity to combine engineering design, environmental compliance, field investigation, industrial process knowledge, and hands-on problem-solving while working on technically challenging projects for industrial municipal, and healthcare, clients throughout Connecticut and the Northeast.
You'll work on projects that help various facilities treat wastewater, control emissions, manage environmental systems, and maintain regulatory compliance. Your work will span the project lifecycle, from investigating existing conditions and developing engineering solutions to supporting permitting, construction, troubleshooting, and system startup.
The role offers a mix of field and office-based work across a diverse range of applications, including industrial wastewater treatment, air pollution control, remediation, chemical and petroleum storage tanks, environmental treatment systems, and industrial processes.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design & Treatment Systems
  • Design and develop industrial wastewater, environmental treatment, remediation, and air pollution control systems.
  • Prepare plans, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation for treatment systems, storage tank systems, industrial processes, and related installations.
  • Prepare engineering design documents for above and underground storage tank installations.
  • Use AutoCAD to develop engineering drawings and design documents.
  • Evaluate existing systems and processes to identify operational, design, or compliance issues.
  • Support equipment selection, construction observation, installation, troubleshooting, startup, and commissioning.

Environmental Compliance & Field Investigation
  • Review environmental permits and regulatory requirements for industrial, municipal, healthcare and other clients.
  • Prepare wastewater and air permits, stormwater and spill plans, oil control plans, Form R and Tier II reports, O&M plans, and other compliance documentation.
  • Conduct field investigations, inspections, sampling, and data collection at various facilities.
  • Perform wastewater and stormwater sampling, evaluate above ground and underground tank systems, treatment systems, and industrial processes.
  • Translate field findings and regulatory requirements into practical engineering solutions.

Client & Project Collaboration
  • Work with clients, project managers, engineers, contractors, and multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Communicate technical findings and recommendations through client meetings, site visits, reports, and design documents.
  • Support project execution, scheduling, construction activities, and technical deliverables.
  • Develop client relationships and provide technical guidance to junior staff as your experience grows.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
  • 5+ years of engineering design experience with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field such as Mechanical, Chemical, Environmental, or Civil Engineering.
  • PE or EIT preferred, along with strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong AutoCAD skills and experience preparing engineering plans, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Industrial wastewater treatment experience, including design or development of treatment systems; experience with remediation, air pollution control, or other environmental treatment systems is a plus.
  • Understanding of industrial processes and treatment-system fundamentals, with the ability to conduct field investigations, sampling, and data collection.
  • Experience with above ground and underground tank systems with the ability to conduct field investigations and support design efforts.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to client sites throughout the region, with occasional travel outside the region as project needs require.

This is a hybrid role, offering the best of both worlds-collaborate in-office with a high-performing team and enjoy the flexibility of working remotely part of the week. We're committed to supporting work-life balance while maintaining strong team connection and project delivery.
