How much do flexible dod medical coding jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average hourly pay for flexible dod medical coding in the United States is $29.99, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.76 and $34.38 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the highest paid medical coder job?

The highest paid medical coding roles are often senior or specialized positions such as Coding Manager, Coding Director, or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) with additional certifications like CCS or CPC-H. These roles typically require extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership skills, and they can offer salaries exceeding $70,000 annually depending on the organization and location.

How flexible is a medical coding job?

A medical coding job offers a high degree of flexibility, often allowing for remote work and adjustable schedules, especially for certified coders. Many positions enable part-time, freelance, or telecommuting arrangements, making it suitable for those seeking work-life balance or additional income. However, deadlines and productivity standards may require consistent availability during certain hours.

What pays more, CCS or CPC?

In medical coding, Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credentials generally lead to higher salaries than Certified Professional Coder (CPC) credentials due to their focus on hospital coding and advanced expertise. However, pay also depends on experience, location, and work environment, with CCS often commanding a premium in specialized or hospital settings. Both certifications are valuable, but CCS typically offers higher earning potential for medical coders.

Medical coding jobs, including roles like flexible DOD medical coding, are not being phased out; instead, the demand for skilled coders remains steady due to ongoing healthcare documentation needs. Advances in technology, such as coding software and electronic health records, have changed workflows but have not eliminated the need for qualified coders with certifications like CPC or CCS.
