Job description

We’re looking for a hands on, experienced Regional Trainmaster to lead train crew activities and ensure the safe, efficient movement of railcars within a dynamic rail yard or industrial setting. In this role, you’ll combine leadership, operational expertise, and real time decision making to keep operations running smoothly all while upholding the highest safety standards.

What You’ll Do

Leadership & Operations

  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of train crews
  • Direct switching operations to ensure efficient loading, unloading, and assembly.
  • Communicate movement instructions via radio, phone, hand signals, or in person direction
  • Ensure proper use of track switches, coupling, and uncoupling procedures
  • Build and develop a high performing team by assisting in recruitment and selection efforts, identifying talent, and making hiring decisions to support Patriot’s long-term goals and culture.

Planning & Coordination

  • Execute switching plans based on customer and management instructions
  • Oversee railcar movement using RMI reporting systems
  • Ensure accuracy of daily train lists and crew documentation

Reporting & Administration

  • Complete and review daily and weekly operational reports
  • Approve and submit labor hours accurately and on time
  • Monitor key operational metrics impacting cost and performance
  • Understand and manage factors such as car hire and demurrage

Safety & Compliance

  • Lead investigations into incidents and accidents, including root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Maintain full compliance with federal railroad regulations and company policies
  • Stay informed on track conditions (e.g., slow orders) and their operational impact
  • Champion a culture of safety every shift, every decision,
  • Provide visible leadership in safety excellence by fostering a proactive safety culture, modeling expected behaviors, and ensuring safety remains a core organizational value

Technical Oversight

  • Download and interpret locomotive event recorder data
  • Train and mentor crew members on safety, procedures, and best practices

What You Bring

  • 3+ years of experience in train operations or trainmen functions
  • Current Locomotive Engineer and Conductor certifications (required)
  • Strong working knowledge of federal railroad regulations
  • Proven ability to lead teams and communicate clearly under pressure
  • Analytical mindset with solid problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Ability to train, coach, and develop employees
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Valid Driver’s License

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Travel

  • Approximately 40–50% travel required
