How much do flaggers jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 5, 2026, the average hourly pay for flaggers in the United States is $17.29, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $14.42 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are flaggers and what do they do?

Flaggers are workers responsible for directing traffic safely around construction sites, roadwork, or other temporary obstructions on roadways. They use signs, hand signals, and other tools to control the flow of vehicles and pedestrians, ensuring the safety of both workers and the public. Flaggers must be attentive, able to communicate clearly, and follow strict safety protocols. Their role is crucial, especially in high-traffic or potentially hazardous environments.

What is the difference between Flaggers vs Traffic Control Technicians?

AspectFlaggersTraffic Control Technicians
CertificationsTypically require flagging certificationRequire flagging certification and may need additional traffic control training
Work EnvironmentOutdoor, on-site at construction zones or roadworksSimilar outdoor environments, often overseeing broader traffic management systems
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by construction companies, road maintenance crewsEmployed by traffic control companies, construction firms, and municipalities

Flaggers and Traffic Control Technicians both work outdoors in traffic management roles, often requiring similar certifications. However, Traffic Control Technicians typically have broader responsibilities, including planning and overseeing traffic control setups, while Flaggers primarily direct traffic at specific points. Both roles are essential for maintaining safety during roadwork projects.

What are some common challenges flaggers face on the job, and how can they be managed effectively?

Flaggers often face challenges such as working in varying weather conditions, remaining alert for long periods, and ensuring clear communication with both drivers and construction crews. Managing these challenges requires proper safety training, wearing high-visibility clothing, and using clear hand signals or radios to coordinate with team members. Staying hydrated, taking scheduled breaks, and maintaining situational awareness are also essential for both safety and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Flagger, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Flagger, you need knowledge of traffic control regulations, attention to detail, and a valid flagger certification, often obtained through a training program. Familiarity with two-way radios, safety signage, and personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential. Strong communication, alertness, and the ability to stay calm under pressure are standout soft skills. These competencies are crucial for ensuring the safety of workers, drivers, and pedestrians in construction or roadwork zones.
