What is fixed income trading?

Fixed income trading involves the buying and selling of securities that pay fixed interest or dividends, such as government and corporate bonds. Traders in this field analyze economic trends, interest rates, and credit risk to make informed decisions about when to buy or sell these securities. The goal is to generate returns for investors while managing risks associated with interest rate fluctuations and issuer creditworthiness. Fixed income trading can take place in various markets, including over-the-counter and exchange-traded platforms.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Fixed Income Trading, and how can they be addressed?

Fixed Income Trading professionals often encounter challenges such as managing interest rate risk, staying updated with rapidly changing market conditions, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong analytical skills, real-time market monitoring, and close collaboration with research teams and compliance officers. Building effective communication with sales and portfolio management teams also helps in making informed trading decisions and adapting strategies as market dynamics evolve.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fixed Income Trader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fixed Income Trader, you need a strong understanding of financial markets, fixed income instruments, and quantitative analysis, often supported by a finance degree or relevant certifications such as CFA. Proficiency with trading platforms (e.g., Bloomberg Terminal), risk management systems, and financial modeling tools is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for making informed decisions and managing client relationships. These skills and qualifications are crucial for navigating complex markets, optimizing trade performance, and ensuring compliance in a highly regulated environment.

Job description

Your Opportunity
At Schwab, you're empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us challenge the status quo and transform the finance industry together.
We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).
The CSIM Trade Operations Team (TOPS) plays a critical role in supporting Schwab's mutual fund and exchange traded fund (ETF) business by providing operational oversight and control across the trade lifecycle. In this role, you will help ensure the accurate processing, confirmation, settlement, and reconciliation of investment transactions, enabling portfolio managers and traders to focus on delivering positive outcomes for clients. Your work will directly contribute to maintaining the integrity, efficiency, and reliability of Schwab's investment operations.
As a Trade Operations Analyst, you will partner with internal teams and external service providers-including brokers, custodians, accountants, and other market participants-to resolve trade, cash, and position discrepancies, monitor corporate actions, and maintain the quality and accuracy of critical operational data. You will use analytical thinking and problem-solving skills to investigate issues, identify process improvements, and support operational projects that enhance efficiency and strengthen controls. This role offers the opportunity to build expertise in trading and settlement processes while developing strong cross-functional relationships and influencing outcomes across a complex operating environment.
You'll join a collaborative team that values accountability, continuous improvement, and partnership. Through exposure to a broad range of operational activities and industry participants, you'll have opportunities to expand your knowledge of investment operations, develop technical expertise, and make meaningful contributions to Schwab Asset Management's success.
What you have
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 1+ years of professional experience in financial services, operations, accounting, business administration, investment operations, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of trading and settlement processes for equity and/or fixed income securities.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze information, evaluate alternatives, and make sound decisions to resolve operational issues.
  • Ability to identify, investigate, and solve problems independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships across teams and with external partners.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment while adapting to changing priorities and business needs.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain data accuracy and support operational controls.
  • Ability to work a flexible 8-hour schedule between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM CST.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 1+ years of experience in trade operations, investment operations, settlements, reconciliations, or related financial operations functions.
  • Experience partnering with brokers, custodians, prime brokers, fund accountants, or other financial services vendors.
  • Experience monitoring vendor performance metrics and supporting operational oversight activities.
  • Experience identifying workflow improvements and contributing to process optimization initiatives.
  • Experience supporting operational projects or system enhancement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with Omgeo Central Trade Manager (CTM).
  • Experience using BlackRock Aladdin or similar investment management platforms.

In addition to the salary range, this role is eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
