What is a fit up?

Fit Up jobs refer to roles in the manufacturing and construction industries where workers are responsible for assembling and aligning metal parts, such as beams, plates, or pipes, before they are welded or joined together. Fit Up technicians or fitters ensure that components are accurately positioned according to blueprints or specifications, using tools and measuring instruments to check alignment and fit. Their work is critical for ensuring the structural integrity and quality of the final assembly. Fit Up jobs require attention to detail, good spatial skills, and often experience with welding or fabrication processes.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a fit up technician?

To thrive as a Fit Up technician, you need a solid understanding of blueprint reading, welding techniques, and metal fabrication, often supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with tools such as measuring instruments, welding machines, and alignment systems is typically required. Attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for ensuring precision and safety on the job. These competencies are essential for producing high-quality assemblies, maintaining workplace safety, and meeting project specifications in metalworking environments.

What are common challenges faced by fit up professionals during the assembly process, and how can they be overcome?

Fit Up professionals often encounter challenges such as misalignment of components, tight tolerances, and handling heavy or irregularly shaped parts. These issues can typically be managed through precise measurement, effective communication with welders and fabricators, and the use of proper tools and jigs to ensure accuracy. Maintaining attention to detail and adhering to safety protocols are essential for ensuring that assemblies meet quality standards and project timelines.

Job description

This is not a general welding position. We are looking for an experienced structural steel fitter/fabricator who is strong in layout, blueprint reading, fit-up, structural steel assembly, and shop production.

Why Work for Ivey League Fabrication?

  • 4-10s Schedule – Monday through Thursday with three-day weekends.
  • Optional Overtime – Extra hours may be available, but overtime is not required.
  • Competitive Pay + Growth – Semi-annual performance reviews with opportunities for raises and performance-based bonuses.
  • PTO & Health Insurance
  • Career Advancement – Opportunity to grow with a rapidly expanding structural steel company.
  • Modern Facility – Work with quality fabrication equipment in our West Jordan shop.

Position Overview

The Lead Fitter / Fabricator is responsible for laying out, fitting, and assembling structural steel according to approved shop drawings.

This position requires someone who can take a set of drawings and parts and turn them into an accurate, weld-ready assembly with minimal supervision.

You must be able to understand piece marks, part marks, member orientation, dimensions, connection details, elevations, hole locations, copes, and assembly requirements.

As a lead fitter, you will also help set the standard for quality and productivity and assist less-experienced fitters and fabricators when needed.

The right person understands that accurate layout and fit-up are critical to keeping fabrication, welding, QC, and shipping moving efficiently.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret structural steel shop drawings and fabrication details
  • Lay out, fit, square, tack, and assemble structural steel members
  • Fit beams, columns, base plates, cap plates, stiffeners, clips, angles, channels, embeds, stairs, and miscellaneous steel
  • Verify dimensions before and during assembly
  • Verify hole locations, copes, plates, orientation, and connection details
  • Identify and organize parts using piece marks and part marks
  • Confirm assemblies match the correct erection and shipping marks
  • Check material and parts before beginning an assembly
  • Catch missing parts, incorrect dimensions, drawing conflicts, or fit-up issues before they create production delays
  • Prepare completed assemblies for welding
  • Coordinate with welders, QC, shop leads, and production management
  • Maintain accurate and consistent fit-up quality
  • Help keep assigned work organized and moving through production
  • Assist with troubleshooting fabrication and fit-up issues
  • Train and support less-experienced fitters and fabricators
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • Follow company safety, quality, and production standards

Requirements

  • Structural steel fitting/fabrication experience required
  • Strong ability to read and understand structural steel shop drawings
  • Strong layout and tape-measure skills
  • Must understand structural steel fit-up, squaring, tack-up, and assembly
  • Must understand piece marks, part marks, member orientation, and fabrication details
  • Must be able to work accurately with limited supervision
  • Experience fabricating beams and columns required
  • Experience with stairs, rails, embeds, and miscellaneous metals preferred
  • Must be able to identify fit-up or drawing problems before assemblies reach welding
  • Must be dependable and organized
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced structural steel fabrication environment
  • Must communicate effectively with shop leadership, welders, and QC
  • Ability to help train and lead less-experienced employees
  • Welding experience is preferred, but this position is primarily focused on fitting and fabrication

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for a true structural steel fitter/fabricator who takes ownership of their work and takes pride in producing accurate assemblies.

This is not a helper position and not just a welding position.

We need someone who can look at a shop drawing, identify the correct material and parts, lay out the member, fit the assembly, verify the dimensions, and confidently send it to welding knowing it is right.

The ideal candidate understands that a strong fitter doesn't just assemble steel—they help prevent mistakes, eliminate rework, and keep the entire shop moving.

Schedule

4-10s Schedule

Monday through Thursday

Optional overtime may be available depending on workload.

Pay

Competitive pay based on structural steel fitting experience and demonstrated ability.

Raises and performance-based bonuses are reviewed semi-annually.

Benefits

  • PTO
  • Health insurance
  • Optional overtime
  • Performance-based bonuses
  • Semi-annual performance and wage reviews
  • Career advancement opportunities
  • Three-day weekends
  • Modern West Jordan fabrication shop
  • Quality structural steel fabrication equipment
