What is a firmware product manager?

A Firmware Product Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the development, strategy, and lifecycle of firmware products, which are specialized software embedded in hardware devices. They work closely with engineering, design, and marketing teams to define product requirements, prioritize features, and ensure that the firmware meets customer needs and business goals. Their role bridges the gap between technical development and customer-facing objectives, ensuring successful product launches and updates. Firmware Product Managers also analyze market trends, gather user feedback, and manage the product roadmap to maintain competitiveness and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware product manager?

To thrive as a Firmware Product Manager, you need a blend of technical expertise in embedded systems and firmware development, along with a background in product management or engineering. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Git, Agile methodologies, and often a technical degree or PMP certification are commonly required. Strong communication, strategic thinking, and cross-functional collaboration skills help you bridge engineering and business needs. These competencies ensure successful product delivery, alignment with customer requirements, and competitiveness in technology-driven markets.

What are some common challenges firmware product managers face when collaborating with hardware and software teams?

Firmware Product Managers often encounter challenges in aligning the timelines and requirements of hardware and software teams, since firmware development is closely tied to both. Coordinating cross-disciplinary teams to ensure that firmware integrates seamlessly with evolving hardware specs and meets software compatibility requirements can be complex. Clear communication, detailed documentation, and proactive risk management are crucial for resolving specification mismatches and preventing delays. Successful Firmware Product Managers foster strong relationships between teams and establish processes for rapid feedback and iteration.

Job description

Product Owner, Firmware & Navigation

Omron Robotics (ORT) is a leading provider of intelligent robotics solutions for factory automation and intralogistics applications. ORT is a subsidiary of Omron Corporation, a global technology company with operations in more than 40 countries worldwide.

We are seeking a Product Owner, Firmware & Navigation to support ORT's mobile robotics value streams by owning execution for onboard software, firmware, and navigation capabilities across Omron's AMR portfolio.

This position reports to the Director, Mobile Product Management and works closely with the Global Product Managers responsible for AMR Programs and underlying mobile software capabilities. This role can be based at any Omron Robotics location in the Americas or Europe.

Primary Responsibility:

The Product Owner, Firmware & Navigation is responsible for execution ownership of onboard AMR software, including firmware, navigation, and related core platform capabilities. This role ensures that engineering teams deliver highquality, scalable software aligned to AMR program needs and broader mobile value stream priorities.

As part of ORT's value stream operating model, this role owns backlog execution and sprintlevel delivery while collaborating closely with Global Product Managers who define the market strategy and roadmap. The Product Owner works closely with the Global Product Managers (and Value Stream Owners), Software Architect, software engineering teams, UX, systems engineering, and commercial stakeholders to ensure predictable delivery, rapid learning cycles, and highquality software releases.

In this role, you will:

  • Own and manage the product backlog for firmware and navigation software supporting ORT's AMR platforms.
  • Translate systemlevel requirements and roadmap priorities into clear user stories and acceptance criteria.
  • Serve as the primary daytoday product interface for firmware and navigation development teams, collaborating closely with stakeholders to clarify scope, resolve dependencies, and remove delivery blockers.
  • Lead backlog refinement, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives alongside software developers and other stakeholders, including the Software Architect.
  • Ensure alignment between firmware and navigation development and AMR programs (Deckload, Turnkey, and solution integration, including MoMa and other application focus areas).
  • Collaborate closely with the Global Product Managers to align sprint outcomes to roadmap goals, releases, and commercial priorities.
  • Work closely with systems engineering, roboticists, and software architects to balance performance, safety, scalability, and delivery velocity.
  • Support coordination across multiple Agile teams where firmware and navigation efforts are split by capability.
  • Participate in systemlevel testing, validation, and release readiness activities.
  • Identify dependencies and risks early, escalating tradeoffs and integration issues as needed.
  • Participate in customer engagement, feedback loops, and internal demos to ensure validated learning informs backlog priorities.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; equivalent experience considered.
  • 5+ years of experience in software product ownership, embedded software, firmware, or technical product roles.
  • Experience working directly with Agile development teams focused on embedded or platform software.
  • Familiarity with robotics systems, realtime software, or safetycritical development environments preferred.
  • To conform with U.S. export control regulations, applicant should be eligible for any required authorization from the U.S. Government.

What We Need to See:

  • Strong working knowledge of Agile/Scrum execution and backlog management.
  • Ability to operate effectively in technically complex environments and make informed execution decisions.
  • Comfort working closely with engineers, roboticists, and system architects.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate across engineering, product, UX, and commercial teams.
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail and quality.

Ways to Stand Out:

  • Experience with autonomous systems, navigation software, or realtime control systems.
  • Familiarity with mobile robotics platforms.
  • Exposure to functional safety, performance optimization, or fieldupdatable embedded systems.
  • Experience supporting multiteam Agile environments.

At Omron, we are dedicated to building an inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you're excited about this role but your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles. We also consider qualified applicants regardless of criminal histories, consistent with legal requirements.

The annual salary range for this role is $128,000 - $178,000 a year, however, base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. This position is also eligible for an annual performance-based bonus program.
