How much do firmware developer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for firmware developer in Massachusetts is $122,572.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $99,900.00 and $132,100.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a firmware developer?

Firmware Developers are engineers who design, develop, and maintain low-level software that directly controls hardware devices. Their work typically involves writing code in languages like C or C++ to ensure hardware components operate as intended, often within embedded systems such as microcontrollers and consumer electronics. Firmware developers collaborate closely with hardware engineers and may also troubleshoot or update firmware to enhance device performance. Their role is crucial in industries like automotive, consumer electronics, and industrial automation.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a firmware developer?

To thrive as a Firmware Developer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, proficiency in C/C++ programming, and a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Experience with microcontroller architectures, debugging tools (like JTAG or ICE), and version control systems such as Git is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across hardware and software teams. These skills are crucial for developing reliable, efficient firmware that enables hardware devices to function correctly and meet user requirements.

What are common challenges firmware developers face when working on embedded systems projects?

Firmware Developers often encounter challenges such as optimizing code for limited memory and processing power, integrating with diverse hardware platforms, and ensuring reliable communication between software and hardware components. Debugging can be especially tricky due to limited visibility into low-level operations, requiring specialized tools like JTAG debuggers or oscilloscopes. Collaboration with hardware engineers and cross-functional teams is essential to address hardware-software integration issues and to ensure timely delivery of stable, efficient firmware.

What is the difference between Firmware Developer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectFirmware DeveloperEmbedded Software Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; certifications like Certified Embedded Systems EngineerBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; similar certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing low-level code for hardware devices, often working in hardware labs or development teamsDeveloping software for embedded systems, often in cross-functional teams, with focus on hardware-software integration
Industry UsageUsed in consumer electronics, automotive, IoT devices, and industrial equipmentCommon in automotive, medical devices, consumer electronics, and industrial automation

Firmware Developers and Embedded Software Engineers share similar skills and work environments, focusing on hardware-related software development. The main difference lies in their scope: Firmware Developers typically work on low-level code directly interacting with hardware, while Embedded Software Engineers may handle higher-level embedded applications. Both roles are essential in industries like automotive, IoT, and consumer electronics.

Are firmware developers in demand?

Firmware developers are in high demand due to the growth of embedded systems in industries such as automotive, consumer electronics, and IoT. Skills in C, C++, and real-time operating systems are particularly valuable, and job opportunities are expected to remain strong as technology continues to advance.

Humanoid

Boston, MA โ€ข On-site

$150K - $200K/yr

Full-time

Job description

Here at Humanoid, we believe in a future where robots amplify human potential. That's why we've set out on a mission to build the world's most capable, commercially-scalable, and safe humanoid robots. We're bringing that mission to life with HMNDโ€‘01 Alpha - our rapidly developed humanoid platform now running in real industrial pilots - and we're growing the team to take it even further.
About the Role
As a Senior DevOps Engineer supporting the safety firmware efforts in Boston, you will play a critical role in building the infrastructure that enables high-quality firmware development for our next generation of humanoid robots. In this position, you will work at the intersection of embedded systems, developer infrastructure, and functional safety, owning the build, integration, and automation systems that allow firmware engineers to move quickly while maintaining the rigor required for safety-critical software. You will partner closely with firmware engineers and related teams to develop a production-grade build and test environment, integrate specialized third-party safety tools, and improve the overall reliability and velocity of the development workflow.
What You'll Do
  • Augment and maintain the firmware portion of our Bazel-based build system, supporting both firmware development and safety-critical software workflows.
  • Integrate, maintain, and automate specialized third-party tooling required for functional safety development.
  • Architect and deploy robust CI/CD pipelines that enhance developer velocity while ensuring build integrity and traceability for safety-related projects.
  • Optimize GitHub Actions and runner infrastructure to reduce latency and support scalable firmware development workflows.
  • Help design and manage infrastructure for automated hardware testing, including the development of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments.
  • Create internal tooling using Python and related technologies to bridge build, test, and analysis systems.
  • Partner with firmware engineers to minimize friction in the development cycle, allowing the team to remain focused on core algorithms and product delivery.
  • Contribute to a production-grade firmware integration system characterized by high reliability, reproducibility, and process integrity.

What We're Looking For
  • Proven expertise with Bazel, Git, and complex CI/CD ecosystems, including the management of GitHub Actions and custom runner infrastructure.
  • Advanced proficiency in Python for architecting internal tooling, automated workflows, and robust system integrations.
  • Experience with embedded toolchains (e.g., GNU, LLVM/Clang), cross-compilation, dependency management, and build pipeline optimization.
  • Experience with automated test infrastructure, specifically regarding hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) or sophisticated lab automation platforms.
  • The ability to collaborate with firmware engineers to streamline development cycles while upholding the rigor, reproducibility, and safety integrity required for safety-critical software.
  • A track record of independently owning and advancing critical infrastructure beyond standard tool administration.
What We Offer
  • Comprehensive health coverage for USโ€‘based employees, including fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, with virtual care and employee assistance resources.
  • Meaningful time off to rest and recharge: 23 days of PTO (accrued), separate sick leave, and paid company holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with employer match.
  • Equity included-we believe builders should share in what they build.
  • Free daily catered lunch, snacks, and drinks inโ€‘office.
  • Collaboration with topโ€‘tier engineers, researchers, and product experts in AI and robotics.
  • Freedom to influence the product and own key initiatives.

For this role in Massachusetts, the expected base salary range is $150K - $200K USD per year; your placement in that range depends on how your experience maps to our internal leveling.
