Overview:
HGA is hiring - Fire Protection Engineer!
Washington, DC
HGA is expanding our Fire Protection Engineering Department, and we're looking for a talented licensed engineer to join our collaborative, multidisciplinary team. You'll work side-by-side with architects and engineers on projects that span healthcare, corporate headquarters, laboratories, museums, government facilities, higher-education campuses, and major infrastructure improvements.

In this role you will:
  • Participate in the design and/or review of fire protection and life safety systems on multi-discipline projects.
    Coordinate with and support other A/E disciplines.
  • Participate in design review meetings and workshops.
  • Assist with preparation of comprehensive fire protection packages including fire suppression, fire alarm, smoke management, and life safety.
  • Create specification documentation for fire alarm and fire suppression systems.
  • Perform fire suppression and alarm systems calculations.
  • Evaluate building and life safety requirements including building area and height limitations, building construction types, fire resistive assemblies and opening protections, occupancy classifications, hazards, building egress, and active and passive smoke management systems.
  • Provide construction administration support including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, the review of contractor shop drawings and calculations, field inspections, and witnessing testing of fire protection systems.
  • Coordinate with all applicable local authority departments to obtain approval at all stages of the project, to include creation of code modification requests and engineering judgements.
  • Perform site evaluations and document existing fire protection systems.
  • Maintain and manage compliance with company and site safety policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned all under the supervision of Senior Engineers.

You will need to have:
  • Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree from an ABET accredited program; Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering a plus.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional fire protection engineering experience, including familiarity with the International Code Council (ICC), NFPA 101, NFPA 13, and NFPA 72.
  • Registered Fire Protection PE.
  • NICET certification in Water-Based System Layout, Fire Alarm Systems, or Special Hazards Systems a plus (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) and may be considered as substitute for Bachelor of Science degree in an otherwise well qualified candidate a plus.
  • Proficient in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, FM Global datasheets, military standards, and refinery/industrial API guidelines.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain access authorization to facilities and data of existing and potential clients.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Revit, BIM, and Microsoft Office skills required.

Salary Information:
The pay range listed aligns to the geography of the office for which this position is posted. Actual compensation will be based upon work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer. Individuals in this role working more than 24 hours a week on a regular basis are eligible to participate in HGA's robust benefit programs which include an annual bonus and success sharing bonus program, 401(k) guaranteed contribution, paid parental leave, medical, dental and life insurance plans as well as PTO and short- and long-term disability programs. Salary Range: $83,200-$155,300.
