Position Overview

This is a technically driven opportunity for a Fire Protection Designer who can independently develop, coordinate, and execute system designs across complex building projects. In this role, you will be responsible for designing fire protection systems that meet strict code requirements while ensuring constructability, efficiency, and alignment with overall project goals.

Beyond design execution, this position offers the opportunity to operate with increasing autonomy while developing into a senior technical contributor. You will work closely with engineers, project managers, and multidisciplinary teams to resolve design challenges, support construction activities, and ensure life safety systems are executed to the highest standard.

Core Responsibilities

  • Independently develop fire protection system layouts, schematics, and detailed design drawings with minimal supervision
  • Perform engineering calculations and system design in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements
  • Coordinate fire protection design with architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical disciplines
  • Review and evaluate equipment and system selections for feasibility and performance
  • Respond to RFIs, submittals, and code-related comments throughout the project lifecycle
  • Support resolution of permitting issues and coordination with AHJs and code officials
  • Review shop drawings for compliance with construction documents and design intent
  • Assist in field inspections and ensure installed systems meet design specifications
  • Support construction administration including punch lists and field issue resolution
  • Participate in client, contractor, and consultant coordination meetings
  • Mentor junior designers and contribute to technical development within the team
  • Maintain project documentation, reports, and technical correspondence

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection, Structural, or Architectural Engineering
  • 6+ years of experience in fire protection or related building systems design
  • OR Associate degree with 8+ years of relevant design experience under PE supervision
  • OR 8โ€“10+ years of practical fire protection or building systems design experience
  • Strong understanding of fire protection codes, standards, and design principles
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (Revit preferred)
  • Experience performing engineering calculations and system layouts
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIT certification preferred
  • Experience working toward PE licensure
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary building systems coordination
  • Experience in commercial, healthcare, or institutional projects
  • Prior field experience including inspections or construction support
  • Experience mentoring junior designers or technicians
