JOB SUMMARY

A Fire Battalion Chief manages and works with various groups in the fire department, which includes ensuring the safety of the team and providing the necessary equipment or resources in emergencies. The Battalion Chief directs emergency scenes and daily shift operations on an assigned shift townwide and supervises or performs specialized function in support of the fire department mission. Due to the nature of their work, Battalion Chiefs are also responsible for administrative duties. Work is performed under the direct supervision of an Assistant Fire Chief(s) or Chief of the Department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Assists Assistant Chief(s) and/or Chief of the Department with supervision of the activities and personnel of the Fire Department.
• Responds to emergency calls and fills the role of supervision when needed.
• Reviews daily shift reports from the off going Battalion Chief and discusses items that need to be addressed with oncoming shift officers and personnel.
• Commands and supervises all firefighting, lifesaving, fire prevention and public relations activities on their assigned shift while following the appropriate incident command system.
• Instructs company officers in all aspects of their work and enforces departmental regulations; makes regular inspections of company personnel, quarters, equipment, and records.
• Wears a respiratory (SCBA) to safely perform all hazard responses in IDLH conditions. Duties may require wearing a respirator thirty (30) minutes to several hours at one time.
• Approves requests for equipment, supplies, and repairs. Inspects, tests, and evaluates new types of firefighting equipment, recommends types, kinds, and quantities of each for future Assists in establishing standard methods of use of equipment.
• Supervises the quality assurance of fire and EMS reports.
• Coordinates risk management activities for the shift including investigating workers comp injuries and property damage accidents. Ensures all reports, photos, and required documents are turned into the proper authorities and departments in a timely manner.
• Oversees the training goals of the entire shift and guides career development of individuals. Visits stations regularly and disseminates mail, documents, and supplies as needed.
• Performs duties involving instructing, assigning, reviewing, and planning work of others; acts on personnel functions and/or concerns to include but not limited to; recommending new hires, transfers, promotions, demotions, terminations, issuing corrective actions and completing employee performance appraisals.
• Supervises administrative details, grants leave and administers discipline. Makes daily staffing assessments for all stations and rotates personal as needed.
• Supervises fire investigations including but not limited to cause and origin determination of fires.
• Considered emergency essential position and subject to report to work during any declared emergency situations.
• Responds to fire scenes and directs the application of water and /or chemical agents to control and extinguish fires and the performance of search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, salvage, overhaul. Responsible to for determining a cause and origin of all fire incidents.
• Supports management by evaluating incoming information, determining information routing and acquiring needed facts. Based upon assignment, participates in department staff meeting and maintains an on call function as a member of the senior staff.
• Perform additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Fire Chief to support the operational readiness and mission of the Moncks Corner Fire Department.

QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience:

A high school diploma is required. Six months of advanced study or training in fire service principals of leadership and management are required. Associates in fire science or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have a minimum of ten years’ progressive, responsible fire service experience, with two years’ experience as a Fire Captain. Departmental testing may be administered during interview. Subject to psychological, physical health screenings, criminal background check and drug and alcohol testing.

Licenses or Certifications:

• Class E South Carolina driver’s license required.
• New Fire Chief Series
• NFPA Fire Officer 3
• 30 College Credits
• Basic Fire/Arson Investigation for First Responder

Job Grade N-113, Minimum Salary: $66,849.03. Actual starting salary dependent upon qualifications and experience.
