Fire Assay Technician - Minerals - Kershaw, South Carolina

What are we looking for?

Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Fire Assay Technician is responsible for processing client samples through the laboratory Fire Assay facility, including weighing, fluxing, fusion, digestion and presentation to AAS/ICP OES.

Shift/Schedule: 12 hour rotating shifts

What you'll do:

  • Ensure all sampling, testing and analysis is conducted safely and accurately to maintain consistent quality standards 

  • Participate in: daily pre-start meetings, shift handovers, Safety meetings  

  • Prepare samples using a variety of digestion, Fire assay and fusion methods testing in accordance with laboratory work instructions and test methods with use of appropriate PPE 

  • Ensure accurate sample reconciliation and chain of custody is maintained. Immediately report any anomalies to the supervisor/manager 

  • Undertake analysis of samples in accordance to documented Intertek laboratory procedures, demonstrating competency to work alone and unassisted as appropriate 

  • Develop and demonstrate the ability to multi-task and self-manage multiple jobs at once to maximize time utilization 

  • Complete work in a timely manner by following the priorities set, this includes but is not limited to picking up of samples, sample preparation, and instrumentation duties 

  • Conducting the routine weekly jobs about the laboratory involving reasonable manual labor required for the maintenance of a clean and contaminant free environment, Work surfaces, Safety cabinets and equipment. 

  • Sample preparation duties such as racking of samples onto and off trolleys and shelving, subsampling, sieving, and compositing of samples 

  • Weighing of samples for various analyses 

  • Inputting results to the Intertek laboratory information management system: MINLIMS 

  • Preparing reports and presenting them for quality control checking by the Laboratory Supervisor and Lab Manager 

  • Comply with all work instructions, work procedures, safe work procedures, safe work instructions, and lawful directions provided by the supervisor, whether written or verbal.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Minimum two (2) year's experience in Fire Assay Technician role
  • Ability to safely perform manual handling tasks, including standing for extended periods and regularly lifting items weighing approximately 50 pounds, in accordance with safe work practices
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills suitable for a laboratory and production environment
  • Ability to work independently once trained, while managing a fluctuating workload and changing priorities
  • Capacity to work effectively in a fast-paced operational environment while maintaining safety and quality standards
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills with sound mechanical aptitude relevant to sample preparation equipment
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team to support operational and production requirements
  • Valid driver's license and reliable driving record is required

Preferred Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree preferred
  • Three years of experience in a Fire Assay Technician role
