Key responsibilities

  • Serve as the company's primary legal advisor, providing counsel to executive leadership and the Board of Directors on legal, governance, and risk matters.

  • Build and lead the legal function, establishing scalable processes and frameworks to support the company's growth.

  • Oversee corporate legal matters including governance, entity structure, board support, and corporate record management.

Job description

At Range, we're building towards a world where anyone can live the financial life they imagine for themselves. If that sounds like a mission you want to be a part of, let's create it together.
We're building AI-powered wealth management. Investments, taxes, retirement, estate planning, all in one platform instead of scattered across different advisors and apps. We're backed by Google's Gradient Ventures, Cathay Innovation, Scale Venture Partners, and more. We're growing fast while still small enough that everyone's work is visible and impactful.
About the Role
Range is seeking an experienced Head of Legal to lead the company's legal strategy and oversee all corporate legal, governance, and regulatory matters as we scale. This role will serve as the company's principal legal advisor and a key strategic partner to the executive leadership team and Board of Directors.
As Range continues to grow its technology platform and financial services capabilities, the Head of Legal will help the company navigate the complex regulatory landscape surrounding modern FinTech, wealth management, and financial data platforms. You will build and lead the legal function, develop scalable governance frameworks, and partner closely with leadership across product, finance, and compliance to ensure Range operates with strong legal and regulatory foundations while continuing to innovate.
This role is based at Range's Headquarters in McLean, VA, with an in-office schedule Monday through Friday.
What you'll do with us
  • Serve as the company's primary legal advisor, providing counsel to executive leadership and the Board of Directors on legal, governance, and risk matters.
  • Build and lead the legal function, establishing scalable processes and frameworks to support Range's continued growth.
  • Oversee corporate legal matters including governance, entity structure, board support, and corporate record management.
  • Provide legal guidance on financial services regulatory matters, partnering closely with compliance leadership.
  • Support product and engineering teams to ensure new financial products and platform capabilities align with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead legal support for corporate transactions including fundraising, strategic partnerships, and potential M&A activity.
  • Draft, negotiate, and manage commercial agreements including vendor contracts, partnerships, and technology agreements.
  • Manage legal risks related to data privacy, cybersecurity, AI usage, and financial data governance.
  • Develop and maintain company-wide legal policies, governance standards, and internal controls.
  • Manage external counsel relationships and legal budgets.
  • Partner with the People/HR team on employment-related legal matters including employee relations, workplace policies, investigations, and compliance with federal and state employment laws.
  • Partner cross-functionally with product, finance, operations, engineering, and compliance teams to support strategic initiatives.

What will set you apart
  • JD from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
  • 12+ years of legal experience, including time in-house at a technology company, financial services firm, or FinTech organization.
  • FinTech experience strongly preferred, particularly within digital wealth management or financial platforms.
  • Experience supporting or advising businesses operating under Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) and/or broker-dealer regulatory frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of financial regulatory environments including SEC and FINRA.
  • Experience advising executive leadership and boards on corporate governance, regulatory strategy, and enterprise risk.
  • Background negotiating complex commercial agreements and strategic partnerships.
  • Familiarity with legal considerations related to data privacy, cybersecurity, and emerging AI technologies.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced startup environment with strong business judgment.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex legal issues into clear business guidance.

Benefits
  • Health & Wellness: 100% employer-covered medical insurance for employees (75% for dependents), plus dental and vision coverage
  • 401(k): Retirement savings program to support your future
  • Paid Time Off: Dedicated time to reset and recharge plus most federal holidays
  • Parental Leave: Comprehensive leave policy for growing families
  • Meals: Lunch 2x week in office + select meals covered throughout the week
  • Fitness: Monthly movement stipend
  • Equity & Career Growth: Early exercise eligibility and a strong focus on professional development
  • Full access to cutting-edge AI tools: We cover the cost so you can experiment, build, and move faster
  • Annual Compensation Reviews: Salary and equity refreshes based on performance
  • Boomerang Program: After two years at Range, you can take time away to start your own company. We'll hold your spot for 6 months - and pause your equity vesting, which resumes if you return

As a company, we are committed to designing products, building a culture, and supporting a team that reflects the diverse population we serve.
