What is a fintech internship?

A Fintech Internship is a temporary position that provides students or recent graduates with hands-on experience in the financial technology industry. Interns may work in areas like blockchain, digital payments, data analytics, or financial software development. Responsibilities typically include research, coding, financial modeling, and assisting with product development. These internships offer valuable industry exposure and networking opportunities for those interested in finance and technology careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a fintech internship?

To thrive in a Fintech Internship, you'll need a solid grasp of finance fundamentals, analytical thinking, and proficiency in programming languages such as Python or SQL, often supported by relevant coursework or academic background. Familiarity with data analysis tools, financial modeling software, and industry platforms like Excel, Tableau, or blockchain technologies is highly beneficial. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and adaptability are essential soft skills that help interns navigate fast-paced and innovative environments. These abilities are crucial for handling complex projects, contributing to cross-functional teams, and seizing growth opportunities in the rapidly evolving fintech sector.

What kinds of projects or tasks are fintech interns typically assigned?

Fintech Interns often work on projects that involve market research, data analysis, process automation, or assisting in the development and testing of financial products and platforms. Depending on the company, you may support teams in product development, risk assessment, or customer experience optimization by analyzing financial data or user trends. Interns frequently collaborate with software engineers, business analysts, and product managers, gaining hands-on exposure to both technical and business aspects of fintech solutions. This cross-functional experience provides valuable industry insights and can help you determine areas for specialization or future career growth.

Job description

We believe that the way people interact with their finances will drastically improve in the next few years. We're dedicated to empowering this transformation by building the tools and experiences that thousands of developers use to create their own products. Plaid powers the tools millions of people rely on to live a healthier financial life. We work with thousands of companies like Venmo, SoFi, several of the Fortune 500, and many of the largest banks to make it easy for people to connect their financial accounts to the apps and services they want to use. Plaid's network covers 12,000 financial institutions across the US, Canada, UK and Europe. Founded in 2013, the company is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in New York, Washington D.C., London and Amsterdam.
This Week in Fintech is the largest global fintech media company with 200,000+ subscribers to a publication that provides insights, news and connections within the financial technology ecosystem. What began as a newsletter focused on curating and sharing industry updates, trends and innovations in the fintech space has grown to include a range of products including podcasts, events, conferences and an online community to bring together fintech professionals, investors, and enthusiasts worldwide.
Building on top of our deeply established and highly respected newsletter ecosystem, we are actively expanding into a full-scale, elite newsroom operation. We are investing heavily in original journalism, breaking news and deep enterprise reporting. This is a rare opportunity to join a growing team at the ground floor and directly shape the voice and direction of a major business publication.
We are looking for an enterprising, sharp and relentless full-time reporter to help us build the front page of Fintech. Whether you are an experienced business journalist or a standout newsroom intern ready to make your mark, we care about your financial literacy, news instincts and drive more than the number of years on your resume.
You won't be stuck rewriting corporate PR or chasing incremental aggregates from a desk all day. You will have the autonomy to own a beat, develop deep sources and break the stories that executives, founders and investors read every morning. We want a reporter who is not afraid to pick up the phone, knock on doors and go out into the field to meet sources face-to-face to find the real story.
Responsibilities
  • Break News & Own the Beat: Track the fast-moving worlds of banking, payments, crypto and venture capital to break scoops and deliver sharp, definitive news coverage.
  • On-the-Ground Source Cultivation: Aggressively build a network of industry insiders, founders, regulators and executives. This isn't a passive role, you'll be expected to actively get out, meet people in the real world, and build trust.
  • Deep-Dive Enterprise Reporting: Pitch and execute high-impact features, regulatory deep dives and analytical pieces that explain why a trend matters.
  • Newsletter & Core Product Growth: Contribute daily/weekly reporting to our core digital products, mastering our distinct, sharp and authoritative voice.

Qualifications
  • Business & Financial Literacy: You know how to read a balance sheet, look for the real story behind a funding round and understand the core mechanics of how money moves.
  • Elite Foundational Training: You have a proven track record of producing clean, accurate copy under tight deadlines-whether through a few years on a business beat or a rigorous internship at a major financial wire, business news organization, or tech publication.
  • The "Front Page" Mindset: You are naturally curious, deeply skeptical, and hate being second to a story. You aren't afraid to pick up the phone, meet people where they are or ask tough questions.
  • Speed and Accuracy: Exceptional news judgment to quickly separate signal from noise in a high-volume, fast-moving industry.

Our mission at Plaid is to unlock financial freedom for everyone. To support that mission, we seek to build a diverse team of driven individuals who care deeply about making the financial ecosystem more equitable. We recognize that strong qualifications can come from both prior work experiences and lived experiences. We encourage you to apply to a role even if your experience doesn't fully match the job description. We are always looking for team members that will bring something unique to Plaid!
Plaid is proud to be an equal opportunity employer and values diversity at our company. We do not discriminate based on race, color, national origin, ethnicity, religion or religious belief, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, transgender status, sexual stereotypes, age, military or veteran status, disability, or other applicable legally protected characteristics. We also consider qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state, and local laws. Plaid is committed to providing reasonable accommodations for candidates with disabilities in our recruiting process. If you need any assistance with your application or interviews due to a disability, please let us know at accommodations@plaid.com.
Please review our Candidate Privacy Notice here.
Additional compensation in the form(s) of equity and/or commission are dependent on the position offered. Plaid provides a comprehensive benefit plan, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k). Pay is based on factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and skillset, and location. Pay and benefits are subject to change at any time, consistent with the terms of any applicable compensation or benefit plans.
