The Role
Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
The Submarine Engineering Advanced Capabilities team is looking for an Engineer Structural 4 for the Advanced Submarine Program.
The candidate is to have a strong knowledge of submarine engineering and design requirements (Ship Specs), internal ship structure, foundations, and platform arrangement for submarines. The ability to apply technical principles, theories, and concepts, in the field of structural design and analysis is required. Experience in working in a collaborative environment to integrate the many ship systems and structural interfaces, with teams of engineers and designers of varying disciplines is desired.
Looking for an individual with strong communication skills, particularly technical writing. The selected engineer will be required to oversee several projects, as well as provide guidance and direction to the junior engineering staff. In addition, presentations to NNS senior leadership, external customers, Navy, government technical warrant holders, and SME's will be required.
Must Have
Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master's Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
  • Working knowledge and utilization of the following software/applications:
  • FEMAP, Abaqus, Teamcenter, Hypermesh, ATIS, DDMS, and MatLab.
  • Ability to learn to execute older government provided software, i.e. FORTRAN.
