Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary
The Estuarine Ecology Lab at UNC-CH's Institute of Marine Sciences seeks a lab manager to: (1) Perform field-based community analyses (trapping, netting, coring, dive surveys) including species identification across a wide spectrum of taxa using dichotomous keys; nutrient analyses for sediment, water and seagrass samples; otolith preparation for microstructure and elemental fingerprinting analyses (cleaning, mounting, sectioning, polishing). This position will also be responsible for maintaining a flow-through seawater laboratory in which marine fishes and invertebrates are held. (2) Train others, prepare instructive protocols, perform quality control tests for field and laboratory gears/instruments, and organize, maintain and update paperwork (MSDS, IACUC protocols, Lab Safety Plan, orientation checklist, etc.) to ensure compliance with University and Federal regulations and guidelines. Assist with hazardous waste shipments. (3) Manage databases for multiple projects including those based on field observations or controlled field and laboratory experiments. Watch over performance of temporary staff, make purchases, aid in proposal writing, and assist with fisheries laboratory and Institute teaching and outreach functions.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent instructional or educational activities related to laboratory management or practice, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
