What does a financial planning assistant do?

A financial planning assistant provides support to a financial planner. You assist with the analysis of potential plans for clients and provide customer assistance whenever they have questions. You also perform administrative duties for your manager, such as scheduling meetings. For qualified financial planning assistants, your job responsibilities may require you to draft letters, documents, or reports.

What are some of the main ways a financial planning assistant supports financial advisors during client meetings?

Financial Planning Assistants play a crucial role before, during, and after client meetings by preparing necessary documentation, gathering and organizing financial data, and creating preliminary reports. During meetings, they often take detailed notes, update financial plans in real time, and ensure that all client questions are documented for follow-up. After meetings, they handle administrative tasks such as updating client files, scheduling follow-up appointments, and coordinating with other team members to implement recommended strategies. This support ensures meetings run smoothly and advisors can focus on client relationships and strategic planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial planning assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Financial Planning Assistant, you need a solid understanding of financial concepts, attention to detail, and typically a degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with financial planning software, CRM systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Excel are commonly required, and certifications like the FPQP (Financial Paraplanner Qualified Professional) can be advantageous. Strong organizational skills, discretion, and excellent interpersonal communication help you build trust with clients and support advisors effectively. These abilities ensure accurate financial analysis, smooth workflow, and high-quality client service in a competitive industry.

Job description

At Range, we're building towards a world where anyone can live the financial life they imagine for themselves. If that sounds like a mission you want to be a part of, let's create it together.
We're building AI-powered wealth management. Investments, taxes, retirement, estate planning, all in one platform instead of scattered across different advisors and apps. We're backed by Google's Gradient Ventures, Cathay Innovation, Scale Venture Partners, and more. We're growing fast while still small enough that everyone's work is visible and impactful.
About the role
We're looking for an experienced Financial Planner to join our team of industry leading wealth advisors, reporting directly to the General Manager of Financial Planning. This individual will be responsible for crafting financial plans for members and continuing to support them through our asynchronous messaging platform. Members are not assigned to one planner, instead they get access to the whole team so that planners can collaborate and dive into their subject expertise based on the specific questions members are asking.
But we're looking for more than just a great advisor - you'll be a key component of helping to reinvent the wealth management space through tech. From collecting financial information, to evaluations and projections, to custom plan delivery, this person will partner with our product team to loan their expertise and provide feedback as we continue to build out our suite of proprietary tools.
This role is based at Range's Headquarters in McLean, VA or one of our hubs in New York City, or Seattle. Employees hired for this position will work in office Monday-Friday. If you are not already located in one of these areas, your willingness to relocate will be a contingency for employment.
What you'll do with us
  • Gain a deep understanding of our members' unique needs and aspirations to confidently advise them on their financial goals
  • Build and implement iterative financial plans and wealth strategies
  • Maintain an in-depth understanding of financial planning, investments, and tax planning
  • Be an active part of a collaborative team and share best practices
  • Assist our engineering and product teams with prioritizing and creating product plans and roadmaps
  • Research and present investment strategies
  • Coordinate tax filing and estate planning

What will set you apart
  • Active designation(s) as a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Enrolled Agent (EA), Equity Compensation Associate (ECA) or similar
  • 4-8+ years experience in a client-facing financial services roles
  • Experience with in depth tax planning and building tax projections for clients
  • Significant experience in delivering financial advice directly to consumers
  • Exceptional investment acumen and knowledge of broader planning topics
  • Significant experience using financial services technology
  • Interest in or passion for the tech space, and a desire to change the industry
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and written communication skills
  • BS or BA in Finance, Accounting, or other related major preferred

Benefits
  • Comprehensive health coverage: Medical, dental and vision
  • 401k plan
  • Technology allowance
  • Hybrid work environment opportunities available for select employees
  • PTO
  • Top of Market Pay
  • Paid parental leave
  • In-person team & company events
