Job description

ENFOS Engineering Intern

ENFOS is redefining how global enterprises manage long-term environmental risk. As the category leader in Environmental Obligation Management, our platform centralizes and automates the full lifecycle of Environmental Remediation Obligations (EROs) and Asset Retirement Obligations (AROs)โ€”replacing fragmented spreadsheets and outdated tools with a purpose-built, multi-tenant SaaS platform.

For 25 years, ENFOS has helped the world's leading industrial companies stay audit-ready, SOX-compliant, and financially in control of their environmental obligations. Privately held and profitable, ENFOS operates with no direct competitors and supports a blue-chip customer base spanning energy and natural resources, chemicals, manufacturing, and logistics end markets.

With regulatory pressure rising and ESG scrutiny intensifying, ENFOS is uniquely positioned to empower Finance, Legal, and Remediation teams to improve decision-making, mitigate risk, and drive long-term balance sheet reliability.

About the Role

As an Engineering Intern at ENFOS, you will work alongside a high-performing team building AI-powered systems that bring structure, transparency, and intelligence to complex environmental and financial workflows. This internship offers hands-on experience developing enterprise-grade capabilities that transform unstructured documents into auditable data, automate validation and exception detection, and enable predictive forecasting for critical accounting and compliance obligations.

Interns will contribute to projects at the intersection of document intelligence, automation, and platform-wide AI helping users extract key information from invoices and transaction documents, generate defensible ARO/ERO cost estimates, and interact with environmental and financial data through natural-language interfaces with full evidence traceability.

This role is ideal for candidates who are excited to apply modern engineering and AI techniques to real-world, regulated systems, while learning from experienced mentors and making meaningful contributions to a fast-growing platform.

How We Work
  • Agile development : Operate in two-week sprints with clear goals, ownership, and rapid iteration.
  • Code quality focus : Prioritize automated testing, code reviews, and clean architecture to ensure long-term maintainability.
  • Modern toolset : Spring Boot, Java, Redis, RabbitMQ, WebSockets, GitLab, Ansible, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines to streamline development and deployment.
  • Engineer empowerment : Encourage autonomy and initiativeโ€”developers are expected to improve performance, scalability, and user experience.
  • Growth mindset : Offer mentorship, exposure to system-level thinking, and a clear path to senior ownership and technical leadership.
Responsibilities

As an Engineering Intern at ENFOS, you will contribute to the development of AI-powered capabilities that transform unstructured environmental and financial documentation into structured, auditable intelligence across the platform. Interns will work closely with senior engineers and product leaders on real-world initiatives, including:

  • Support Document Intelligence & OCR workflows : Assist in building and improving AI-powered document processing pipelines that extract structured data from invoices, purchase orders, proposals, and supporting transaction documents.
  • Contribute to automated data capture and validation : Help implement systems that automatically populate key fields, validate entries against approved records, and detect exceptions to reduce manual entry and improve auditability.
  • Work on predictive estimation and forecasting tools : Support the development of data-driven forecasting models for Asset Retirement Obligations (ARO) and Environmental Remediation Obligations (ERO), leveraging historical cost, timeline, and site-specific signals.
  • Assist with platform-wide AI enablement : Contribute to natural-language access features that allow users to query environmental, financial, and compliance data with full evidence traceability and governance.
  • Build with reliability and transparency in mind : Learn and apply best practices for explainable AI outputs, structured workflows, and audit-ready system design in regulated accounting environments.
  • Collaborate across teams : Partner with engineering, product, and implementation teams to translate business and customer needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Gain hands-on experience in enterprise-grade systems : Work directly within production-quality workflows, tools, and engineering standards while receiving mentorship and guidance from experienced team members.
  • Modernize UI for Document Management System : Contribute to enhancing and modernizing the user interface for ENFOS' Document Management System, improving usability, performance, and the overall experience for managing and reviewing transaction and compliance documents.
