What is a financial assistant?

A financial assistant is an entry-level employee on a finance team that takes on administrative duties, allowing the more advanced financial professionals to concentrate on their work. As a financial assistant, your primary responsibilities are to maintain records, perform calculations, and prepare financial reports, but you likely have additional duties like recording data in financial software programs, attending meetings with your team, and recommending improvements based on current information. The qualifications to become a financial assistant are strong mathematical skills, a bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting, and some experience in the finance industry. As you gain experience, you can move up in your career to positions like financial manager.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Financial Assistant, you need strong numerical aptitude, attention to detail, and a background in finance or accounting, often supported by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with accounting software (such as QuickBooks or SAP), spreadsheets, and financial reporting systems is typically required. Effective communication, organizational skills, and discretion are standout soft skills in this position. These qualities are essential for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting business decisions, and ensuring the integrity of financial processes.

How does a financial assistant typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Financial Assistants often work closely with various departments such as accounting, human resources, and operations to ensure accurate budgeting, timely expense reporting, and compliance with company policies. They may be responsible for gathering financial data from different teams, processing invoices, and assisting in preparing financial statements. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, as these collaborations help maintain smooth financial operations and support organizational decision-making.

  • Maintain the integrity of financial records, ensure compliance with accounting policies and procedures, and support audits, regulatory reporting, and banking requirements.
  • Support accounts payable and accounts receivable activities, while maintaining accurate records for Rhino and affiliated real estate entities.

  • Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis by evaluating business performance, monitoring variances, and providing insights to support decision-making.
  • Partner with finance and cross-functional teams to support P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow projections.
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial processes, leverage technology, and enhance operational efficiency.

Fixed Assets & Capital Management

  • Manage fixed asset accounting activities, including tracking capital expenditures, maintaining asset records, monitoring work-in-progress projects, recording depreciation and amortization, and coordinating asset disposals.
  • Partner with operational teams to ensure capital investments are accurately recorded and properly capitalized.

Insurance, Credit & Business Support

  • Support insurance administration, including annual renewals, policy documentation, and insurance verification requests.
  • Assist with customer credit reviews, credit limit recommendations, and collection activities for accounts that fall outside payment terms.

Requirements

What you'll need to succeed:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Entry-level accounting or finance experience through coursework, internships, co-ops, or previous work experience.
  • Foundational understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial reporting practices.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze information, identify discrepancies, and approach problems with curiosity and sound judgment.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly and effectively.
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets, financial systems, and data, with a willingness to learn new tools and technology.
  • Ability to prioritize work, manage multiple deadlines, and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Collaborative approach and willingness to learn, ask questions, share knowledge, and support teammates.
  • Interest in developing skills across accounting, financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and other areas of finance.
  • Ability to utilize email, Microsoft applications, and other internal software for daily communication between facilities, shifts, and departments.

Compensation & Employment Requirements:

Salary Range: $60,000 - $80,000

The wage listed here reflects our best-faith estimate for this role.
