What is a financial analyst associate?

Financial Analyst Associates are entry- to mid-level professionals who support senior analysts and management by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting financial data to help guide business decisions. They typically work in banks, investment firms, or corporate finance departments, preparing reports, forecasting trends, and evaluating financial performance. Their insights help organizations manage budgets, assess risks, and identify opportunities for growth. This role is often a stepping stone to more senior financial analyst or management positions.

What are some common challenges financial analyst associates face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Financial Analyst Associates often juggle several projects, such as preparing reports, building financial models, and supporting budgeting processes. One challenge is balancing tight deadlines from different internal stakeholders while ensuring accuracy and attention to detail in their analyses. Effective time management and prioritization skills are essential to meet expectations and deliver quality work. Collaborating with team members and proactively seeking clarification from managers can help navigate competing priorities and maintain a manageable workload.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial analyst associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Financial Analyst Associate, you need strong analytical skills, a solid grasp of accounting and finance principles, and typically a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Proficiency with financial modeling, Microsoft Excel, and tools like Bloomberg Terminal or SAP is highly valued, as is familiarity with data visualization software. Exceptional attention to detail, communication abilities, and problem-solving skills set top performers apart. These competencies enable accurate analysis, effective decision-making support, and clear communication of financial insights to stakeholders.

Job description

Overview
Do you love logic, dream in spreadsheets, and consider mental math to be a fun party trick? Are you passionate about joining a company that is making the world a better place? Let's talk!
We're looking for a Senior Analyst / Associate to sit at the intersection of finance, accounting, operations, and commercial strategy. This cross-functional role sits on the Finance team and provides an entry point into any & all data that makes our business tick. You'll start with financial & operational data and expand into sales & marketing data. Within a few months, we'll want you to develop a full mental map of how the data flows across and between our systems, building expertise on which data is needed to answer which questions. You'll eventually provide input into how to improve our systems to improve data quality.
In early weeks, you will start with a monthly review of our financial statements, including variance analysis and working with our accountants to resolve any questions. You'll start to understand the data flows between our operational systems and accounting systems, and perform ad hoc comparisons across systems as-needed. Soon after, you'll start to analyze install costs, shipping costs, inventory, expenses, and sales performance by channel. You'll also support department leads in the FY27 budgeting process and ROI analyses for potential projects.
Your past experience includes financial analysis and accounting, so that you are well-prepared to communicate with our accountants and provide financial analyses for an executive audience.
In your application, please 1) include a cover letter and resume, 2) highlight any part of your background (job responsibilities, degrees, grades, test scores) that persuasively describes your training for the role, and 3) list any coursework in finance and accounting.
We value diversity and are committed to building a team that reflects a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. We're especially focused on fostering an inclusive workplace where everyone can contribute to our shared mission.
This is a full-time position and it is expected to be in-office 4 days per week with 1 day flexible for in-office or remote work. Our office is located in Berkeley, CA.
What you'll do
All-purpose analytical support:
  • Accounting: Review month-end results; do variance analysis; work with accountants to resolve any open issues; work on longer-term projects such as department creation
  • Finance: Support budgeting, forecasting, modeling, ad hoc analyses
  • Sales & marketing: Review performance by sales channel, track metrics, analyze sales leads, review deal economics, analyze cost of customer acquisition
  • Operations: Analyze weekly metrics for sales, production, & fulfillment; support inventory counts and reconciliation; support COGS analyses
  • Supply chain: Modeling and forecasting
  • Other analytical projects as needed

Serve as a key participant in efforts to improve our data quality and connect the dots between data systems.
What you'll bring
Analytical expertise
  • Knowledge of finance and accounting
  • High achievement in roles that are highly quantitative
  • Ability to break a problem into its logical components
  • Ease in building a model to capture a complex business or financial process
  • Quick ability to spot inconsistent data, break-downs of logic, or anything else standing in the way of a tight analysis
  • Experience modeling in g-sheets
  • Openness to the AI adventure - utilizing your strong intellect in tandem with AI to produce great analyses and insights

Communication and cross-functional collaboration
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ease in working cross-functionally with all departments and all levels of the company

Joy and passion for work
  • Comfort in an always-changing start-up environment
  • Willing to step into whatever project or situation needs your assistance
  • Calm under pressure. You bring clarity when things get chaotic.
  • Low ego, high accountability. You collaborate cross-functionally with openness.
  • Mission-driven. You care about electrification and building products that truly serve customers.

Location
This is an in-office role that is on site four days with 1 day flexible for in-office or remote work. Our office is located in Berkeley, CA.
Compensation & Benefits
The salary range for this role is $120-145,000 per year. We are committed to equitable compensation and we offer a generous benefits package to make sure you have the support you need.
Equal Employment Opportunity
We are committed to creating an equitable and inclusive environment for all our employees and are seeking to build a team that reflects the diversity of the people we hope to serve with our products. We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
