Major Duties
Under the oversight of the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Directors, the Stage Technician - Specialist supports events and performances at The Soraya and Plaza Del Sol on an as-needed basis. The incumbent works to maintain the integrity, condition, and value of the facilities as a world-class performing arts center for the campus and the larger community.
  • Fulfills other tasks within the technical production department, including but not limited to - carpentry, properties, rigging, and wardrobe.
  • Assists with load-in, rehearsal/performance, and load-out for a variety of events, including music, dance, theatre, guest speakers, and film screenings.
  • Interacts with visiting production staff, rental clients, and university events staff in the execution of events; works to maintain a safe work environment for staff and clients and assists in the maintenance of stage equipment and systems; ensures a positive experience for all artists, faculty, students, staff, and community.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Equivalent to four years of experience working for a theater, repertory, or stock company engaged in the applicable production specialty area (i.e. costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting, and/or audio/sound production) or related field.
  • Equivalent to full-time college or university education/vocational school training in the Arts or job-related field may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Thorough and specialized knowledge and experience in applicable production specialty; more sophisticated knowledge of design theory and principles to be able to translate design specifications, blueprints, or drawings into costume, scene, lighting, or sound production and effects.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety requirements and standards related to production support specialty and stage operations and ability to train others in safety measures and ensure compliance with codes and regulations. Comprehensive knowledge of historical periods for design and construction of materials and effects related to applicable production specialty.
  • Ability and Specialized skills to: independently manage production support projects and productions by breaking segments into working units that coincide with production needs; work on more complex projects/designs and work with more difficult materials and equipment, including the ability to select and use the most appropriate materials to meet production needs; use more complex features of applicable software packages for production specialty; plan the layout and use of work areas.
  • Thorough working knowledge of carpentry including the ability to operate applicable hand, power, and woodworking tools; ability to work with a wide range of set and scenery construction materials; ability to paint scenery from designer renderings, elevations, sketches, or models; ability to create scale renderings or models; thorough knowledge of lighting, sound, counterweight, and other stage systems and equipment; and ability to operate and troubleshoot computerized set and scenery systems.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
  • Classification: Performing Arts Technician II / 0840 / 2
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $28.00 - $32.07 per hour, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is: $23.83- $34.71 per hour.
  • HOURS: Intermittent, on-call; hours and schedule vary including evenings and weekends
  • TEMP: Temporary-renewable, end date to be determined.
  • The individual hired for this role will physically work on-campus in Northridge. This is not a telecommute position.
