General Function
The Set Construction Instructor is responsible for delivering hands-on training that prepares students for entry-level employment in film, television, theater, and media production industries. The instructor teaches the fundamentals of set construction while emphasizing practical skills used in professional film and television set environments. The instructor will work closely with the Director of Workforce & Trades Education in matters related to and for the benefit of the program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach students how to construct, assemble, and dismantle film and television set pieces.
  • Demonstrate safe operation of hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment used in set construction.
  • Introduce students to industry terminology, workflow, and job roles within the art department and construction departments.
  • Teach basic blueprint reading, measurements, layout techniques, and framing used for set pieces and flats.
  • Maintain a safe, organized workshop environment in compliance with OSHA and college safety standards.
  • Evaluate student performance through hands-on projects and practical demonstrations.
  • Maintain attendance records and submit required documentation in accordance with workforce development policies.
  • Collaborate with local film industry professionals to ensure curriculum reflects current industry practices.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 5 years of direct experience in film and television set construction.
  • Ability to effectively teach hands-on technical skills to adult learners.
  • Basic computer skills.

Preferred Requirements
  • Associate's degree or higher in theater production, film production, carpentry, construction, or a related field.
